PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kelvin Nguyen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Morgan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Mark Morgan was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kelvin Nguyen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mark Morgan!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Morgan tries to close the distance and clinch but Nguyen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nguyen throws a big shot that misses.
Morgan lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Morgan is looking to clinch.
Morgan lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Morgan is stalling here. Nguyen is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Morgan seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Nguyen has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Nguyen throwing strikes but Morgan manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Morgan has control of an arm but Nguyen manages to advance to Morgan's back!
Nguyen lands a shot to the body.
Morgan is trying to get back to his feet but Nguyen has full control of the position and if anything, Morgan has just worked his way into a worse spot.
You can see the frustration on Morgan's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Morgan is covering up but some of the strikes from Nguyen are getting through and doing damage.

Morgan has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.
Morgan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nguyen. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Nguyen lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kelvin Nguyen will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Morgan tries to clinch there but Nguyen circles away.

Morgan bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Morgan escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nguyen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Nguyen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Morgan wants to sweep but no luck.
Morgan is breathing heavily.
Nguyen postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Nguyen would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Kelvin Nguyen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mark Morgan has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Morgan has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Nguyen is proving hard to escape from.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Nguyen can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Morgan controls the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mark Morgan was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Morgan wants to clinch up but Nguyen keeps it at a distance.

Morgan shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Nguyen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Morgan is working away from the top position though.
Morgan has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Nguyen works to full guard.

Morgan avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Morgan throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Mark Morgan hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Nguyen doesn't manage to clinch there - Morgan circles away.

Morgan closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Morgan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Morgan is looking to take a break and control but Nguyen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Morgan stalling away here and it's allowed Nguyen to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Morgan throws an elbow that misses. Nguyen uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Morgan's guard. Nice move by Nguyen!

Morgan throws his legs up looking for a submission but Nguyen uses it to pass to side control.
Nguyen works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Morgan takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nguyen decides to stand up, so the ref orders Morgan to his feet.

Morgan closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Morgan lands in his opponent's guard.

Morgan is looking to work some ground and pound but Nguyen has wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nguyen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Morgan defends well.

Morgan stands and steps away. Nguyen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Morgan is looking to chop away at Nguyen's legs.

Morgan shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Morgan was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

I think Morgan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
