PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ned Hopkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Enzo Espinosa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ned Hopkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Enzo Espinosa!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Daniel Cesar and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hopkins with a lazy takedown attempt
and Espinosa counters with a series of strikes. Hopkins will be more careful next time no doubt.

Espinosa gets caught flat footed, as Hopkins shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Hopkins throws a big elbow that misses.

Espinosa has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hopkins can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Espinosa is trying to control the position but Hopkins postures up.
Hopkins keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Espinosa's head.
Hopkins is looking to stand up but Espinosa won't let him.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hopkins content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Espinosa looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hopkins is one step ahead there.
Hopkins is looking to work some ground and pound but Espinosa has wrist control.
Hopkins really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Hopkins has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Hopkins throws a strike but Espinosa rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Hopkins looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hopkins will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Espinosa wants to control from the top but Hopkins keeps moving.
Espinosa working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hopkins accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Hopkins wants to stand and escape but instead Espinosa has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Espinosa is looking to stand up but Hopkins won't let him.
Espinosa wants to control from the top but Hopkins keeps moving.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Espinosa accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Enzo Espinosa has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

and Espinosa holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Espinosa's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Hopkins gets tackled into the cage by Espinosa. Espinosa maintains the clinch.
Hopkins is trying to force a seperation but Espinosa has the dominant position.
Hopkins tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Espinosa smiles and moves away.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Espinosa makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Espinosa has Hopkins up against the cage in a clinch.

Hopkins gets control of Espinosa's arms and successfully pulls guard. Hopkins will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Enzo Espinosa.
Hopkins tries to score a power double leg takedown but Espinosa sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hopkins somewhat.

Hopkins tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Espinosa defends well and Hopkins ends up having to push Espinosa into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Hopkins is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Espinosa is defending well for now.

Espinosa throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Hopkins to regain full guard.
Espinosa wants to get up but he can't break Hopkins's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Enzo Espinosa showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Espinosa connects with a nice short shot to Hopkins's temple.

Well Espinosa has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
