Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Howard Castaneda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Miguel Sanchez!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Ryoma Takatsuka and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Castaneda enables Sanchez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Castaneda manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Sanchez wants to stand but Castaneda is controlling his posture from full guard.
Sanchez postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Sanchez counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Castaneda is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Sanchez manages to break the clinch.
Castaneda slips a jab and a cross from Sanchez.

Sanchez closes the distance and pushes Castaneda back into the cage.

Sanchez turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Check out the look on Sanchez's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Sanchez working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Sanchez creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Castaneda sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sanchez in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Sanchez misses with the ground and pound.
Sanchez slows the pace down.
Sanchez with the ground and pound but Castaneda regains half guard under the barage of strikes.

Sanchez escapes and gets back to his feet.

Sanchez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Castaneda is trying to defend but Sanchez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Castaneda is breathing heavily.
Sanchez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sanchez's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Miguel Sanchez wasn't active enough on the ground.

Sanchez has taken the fight to the clinch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Castaneda tries to pull guard but Sanchez holds him up against the cage and eventually Castaneda drops back down to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Castaneda drags the fight down to the ground.
Sanchez wants to get up but he can't break Castaneda's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miguel Sanchez dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Sanchez looks to score with a jab to the body but Castaneda is just out of range.

Sanchez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Sanchez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Sanchez sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Sanchez lands a big shot to the head and Castaneda winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
