PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cyrus Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Elijah Chains (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chains has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Elijah Chains is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cyrus Pope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Elijah Chains!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Anthony Taglia and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pope goes for a double leg but Chains avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Chains continues to drive forward.

Pope breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Pope shoots in for a double leg but Chains sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Pope tries to clinch but Chains is having none of it.
Nice takedown defense from Chains. No joy for Pope on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cyrus Pope. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Pope drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Sloppy strikes there by Pope.
The strikes coming from Pope are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Pope cracks Chains with a big right hand but Chains just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pope decides to stand back up. Pope steps back and let's Chains get back to his feet.
Chains looks winded!
Chains tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pope swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Chains closes this distance looking for a takedown but Pope circles away.

and Pope counters with an outside leg kick.

Pope dives in for a single leg takedown but Chains sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Pope breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Pope shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Chains's guard.
Pope might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Pope postures up in Chains's guard and throws a big left but Chains blocks it.
Pope postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Pope throws a strike but Chains rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Pope manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Chains manages to get himself to full guard.

Pope stands up from Chains's guard - Pope perhaps looking for a knockout.

No luck for Pope with that takedown attempt.
Chains keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Pope looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Pope could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pope shoots for a double leg takedown but Chains sprawls well. He's pushed Pope's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Chains shoots for a takedown but Pope saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Pope misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Pope shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Chains as he avoids it easily.
Pope throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Chains moves out of range of the body kick.
Pope shoots in but no luck this time.

Pope tries to keep at a distance but Chains has taken the fight into the clinch.

Pope wants the takedown. Chains is fighting it off but Pope persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Chains's guard against the cage.

Pope in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Chains is working an open guard so Pope takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Pope has managed to clinch.
Chains lands a hook to the side of the head.

Pope breaks the clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Pope clinches.
Pope tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Chains just stands there and leans against the cage.
Chains is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Pope pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Pope gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Pope lands strikes from half guard.

Pope gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cyrus Pope dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Pope keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Pope darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Pope working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Chains on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Pope throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Chains is breathing heavily.
Chains is looking to control Pope's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Chains avoid being mounted?

Pope looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Chains with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Cyrus Pope overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pope is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Pope is looking for a kimura but Chains is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Pope to get the leverage.

Chains keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Pope decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Pope is trying hard to land a takedown here. Chains sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Pope stuffs the takedown.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Pope darts in and clinches Chains up against the cage.
Pope has had enough of the clinch but Chains keeps him there for the moment.
Chains has Pope pressed against the cage, preventing Pope from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Chains ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Chains no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Pope stands and steps away. Chains gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Chains tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pope swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Pope shoots in but Chains avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Pope drives through with a takedown into Chains's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Pope wants to stand but Chains is controlling his posture from full guard.

Pope has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Chains enables Pope to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Chains manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Chains has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pope can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Pope tries to keep at a distance but Chains has taken the fight into the clinch.

Pope displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Chains.

Pope tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Chains defends well and Pope ends up having to push Chains into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Chains has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Pope uses from the top position.

Pope wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Pope controls Chains momentarily but Chains frees himself.
Chains stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pope swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Chains trying to control the position from guard on top but Pope is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Chains wants to pass the guard but Pope is keeping the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Cyrus Pope showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Pope has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
