PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Amon Amarth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joao Rao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Amon Amarth!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joao Rao!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Luis Engracia and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rao shoots for a double leg takedown but Amarth sprawls well. He's pushed Rao's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Rao tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Amarth paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Rao misses with a body kick.
Rao tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Amarth swivels and escapes.
Rao takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Amarth looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Rao misses with a head kick.

Rao gets caught flat footed, as Amarth shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Amarth makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Amarth not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Amarth trying to control the position from guard on top but Rao is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Amarth stops Rao from standing up.
Rao keeping full guard, as Amarth tries to pass.
Rao wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Amarth is now in half guard.
Amarth wants to control but Rao is keeping him busy.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Amarth slips a jab and a cross from Rao.
Amarth connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Rao's hands.

Rao drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Amarth looking for a sweep. Not yet Amarth, not yet.

Rao decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Amarth, up you get!

A head kick misses from Amarth.
Rao misses with a two punch combination.
Rao ducks right into an uppercut from Amarth.
Amarth tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rao paws at him with a jab and circles away.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Amarth tries to free his leg and advance position but Rao is retaining full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Amarth misses with a wild body shot.
Rao will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

and Rao takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Amarth counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Rao's guard now.
Amarth is breathing heavily.

Rao has his foot on Amarth's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Amarth works his way back into a safe position though.

Rao wants to stand and escape but Amarth is having none of it.

Rao throws a head kick that misses.
Amarth lands a nice hook to Rao's body. Rao takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Amarth tries to clinch but Rao is having none of it.

Rao shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Rao stays in close to Amarth's body and controls the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Rao is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Amarth on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Amarth tries to get out of the position.

Amarth shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rao's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rao wants to pass the guard but Amarth is keeping the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rao tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Amarth paws at him with a jab and circles away.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rao moves in looking to clinch but Amarth pushes him off.
Amarth will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Rao misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Rao tries to close the distance and clinch up but Amarth swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Amarth throws a right and a left that Rao avoids nicely.
Rao closes the distance and clinches up with Amarth, looking for a takedown. Rao pushes Amarth against the cage but Amarth circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Amon Amarth seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rao shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Amarth as he jumps to the side.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rao ducks under a wild hook from Amarth.
Amarth moves out of range of the body kick from Rao.
Rao fails with the takedown.
Rao tries to close the distance and clinch but Amarth swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Amon Amarth will probably get the nod.

Rao wants to clinch

and Amarth counters with a nice double leg into side control. Rao won't be happy with that.
You can see the frustration on Rao's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Amarth wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rao keeps working.
Rao is looking for a sweep.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Amarth wants to control but Rao is keeping him busy.
Amon Amarth overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Rao is looking to reverse the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Rao ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Amarth moves away.
Rao shoots in for a double leg but Amarth sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Amarth moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Amarth swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Rao is looking to clinch but Amarth is avoiding it.
Amarth is looking to wear down Rao with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Amarth fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Rao on the side of the head.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rao decides to stand up, so the ref orders Amarth to his feet.
Rao tries to clinch there but Amarth circles away.

Rao is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Amarth keeps control of Rao as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Rao tries to pull guard but Amarth holds him up against the cage and eventually Rao drops back down to his feet.

Rao is trying to drag Amarth to the mat but Amarth just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Amarth wants to break the clinch but can't.
Rao tries to pull guard but Amarth won't allow it.
Rao fails to pull the fight into his guard.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Rao takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Joao Rao has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rao misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Amon Amarth showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Amarth has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
