PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Bjorn Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Atreides (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these fighters had to take extra time to make weight as they missed the initial 170lb limit. Bjorn Sonnen came in at 172.9 and Paul Atreides came in at 171.2 but after the extra two hours, both guys managed to get within the one pound allowance. No doubt it will have affected them physically though, so let's see if that has an impact on the fight. Paul Atreides told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Atreides doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Atreides ducks under a wild hook from Sonnen.

Sonnen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Atreides to the mat! Atreides manages to get full guard.
Sonnen tries to stand but Atreides is controlling from the bottom.
Atreides is looking to stand up but Sonnen isn't so interested in that idea.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sonnen accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Atreides is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Sonnen has managed to free his arm - good work.
Atreides wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sonnen keeps working.

Sonnen makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Sonnen throws a jab when Atreides was well out of range.
Sonnen misses with a wild combination.
Atreides throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Atreides throws a low kick but it's checked well by Sonnen.
Atreides tries to clinch but Sonnen is having none of it.
Sonnen fails to land the takedown.

Atreides bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sonnen's guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Sonnen wants to get back to his feet but Atreides is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Atreides stands and steps away. Sonnen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Bjorn Sonnen will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Sonnen scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Atreides is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sonnen sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Bjorn Sonnen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sonnen keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Sonnen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Atreides looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Sonnen is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Atreides can do to turn this around?

Atreides throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sonnen tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Atreides is in Sonnen's guard.
Sonnen is looking to stand up but Atreides isn't so interested in that idea.

Sonnen is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Atreides shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sonnen but Sonnen pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Atreides drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Sonnen blocks a head kick by Atreides.
Sonnen tries to bum rush Atreides with a series of wild strikes but Atreides uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Atreides instigates a clinch.
Atreides is looking to control Sonnen's arms but Sonnen gets an underhook and turns him. Now Atreides has his back to the cage.

Sonnen pulls guard effortlessly.
Atreides wants to get up but he can't break Sonnen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Sonnen wants to stand and escape but Atreides is having none of it.
Sonnen preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Atreides stops Sonnen from standing up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sonnen pushes Atreides off and scrambles back to his feet.

Sonnen scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

It looks like Paul Atreides has been cut.
Sonnen is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.
Atreides shoots and misses
and Sonnen counters with a straight right hand.
Bjorn Sonnen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Atreides.

Atreides shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sonnen but Sonnen pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Sonnen buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Atreides pushes a forearm under Sonnen's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Sonnen is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
