PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Robert Singh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Quan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Robert Singh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, James Quan!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Winston Alpacca and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Quan as Singh shoots in.
Singh tries to score a power double leg takedown but Quan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Singh somewhat.
Singh fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robert Singh. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Quan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Singh as he jumps to the side.
Quan tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Singh paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Quan drives through and clinches with Singh against the cage.

Singh decides to pull guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Singh is trying to control the position but Quan postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Singh is trying to hold Quan in close to prevent damage but Quan has managed to pass into half guard.

Quan wants to control the pace but Singh is squirming around nicely.

Quan takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Quan lands a couple of good shots and Singh has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Singh knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Quan on the ground.

You can see the frustration on Singh's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Quan cracks Singh with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Singh from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
Singh looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Quan keeps control of the position as Singh tries to break free.

Quan throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.

Quan scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.

Singh tries to escape but Quan has the hooks in and won't let him break free.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Quan tries to clinch but Singh is having none of it.

Singh gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Quan to score an easy takedown into full guard.

and Singh counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Quan is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Singh fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Quan tries to close the distance and clinch but Singh swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Quan shoots in but Singh avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Singh breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Singh darts in looking for a takedown but Quan gets double underhooks and turns Singh into the cage.

Singh keeps the fight on the outside.
Robert Singh is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nice takedown defense from Singh. No joy for Quan on that attempt.

Quan shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Singh sprawls well. Singh wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Quan gets slowly back to his feet.

Singh throws a right hand that Quan ducks under and follows up with a left that Quan also avoids with ease.
Singh shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Quan but Quan pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Singh tries to score with a low kick but Quan moves his leg out of the way.
Quan is looking to clinch but Singh is avoiding it.
Singh changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Quan tries to avoid it but Singh manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Quan to the ground. Quan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Quan looks for the body kick but Singh saw that one coming.
Quan tries to clinch there but Singh circles away.
Singh closes the distance but Quan moves to the side
and Quan counters with a right hand to the body.

Quan tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Singh defends well and Quan ends up having to push Singh into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Quan gets control of Singh's arms and successfully pulls guard. Quan will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Singh wants to control from the top but Quan keeps moving.
Singh wants to stand but Quan has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Singh trying to control but Quan is working from the bottom.

Quan is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That was a close second round but I would say that Robert Singh will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Quan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Singh has gone for a leg lock! Quan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Singh's guard.


Singh has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Quan is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Singh.

Singh tries to control but Quan manages to take his back.

Quan is looking for the choke from the back position but Singh is controlling his hands well.

Quan working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Quan has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Singh rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Quan moves into full mount! Singh won't be happy about that!

Quan looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Singh is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Quan trying to control but Singh is having none of it.
Singh tries to improve his position but instead Quan has taken his back!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Singh manages to reverse the position and now he's in Quan's guard. Nice work there by Singh.
Singh looking to sit in guard and control but Quan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Quan pushes down on Singh's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Quan wants to control but Singh is keeping him busy.
Quan misses with a head shot. Singh uses the momentum to regain guard.
Singh keeping moving, preventing Quan from controlling successfully.

Singh wants to improve his position but instead Quan has moved into half guard.

Singh looking for a kimura from the bottom but Quan passes into side control!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Singh is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Quan decides to take the fight back to the feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
James Quan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Quan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
