PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Arron Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zang Pu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Arron Martin has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Arron Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Zang Pu!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Dillan Fox and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pu misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Pu shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Pu throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Martin's head.


It looks like Arron Martin has been cut.
Martin really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Pu gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A body shot lands from Pu.
Martin is trying to break the clinch but Pu is controlling him.
Pu tries to pull guard but Martin holds him up against the cage and eventually Pu drops back down to his feet.
Pu told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.
Pu tries to circle away but Martin has him pinned against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pu tries to break the clinch but Martin is controlling the position.

Martin successfully pulls guard.
Martin pulls Pu in close to prevent any damage.
Martin trying to control the position.

Martin looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Pu has picked Martin up and slammed him! Martin can't keep hold of the triangle and Pu manages to pass to side control!
Martin tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Martin is working hard here to advance position.

Pu thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Martin wants to control but Pu postures up.
Martin is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Martin's face as Pu controls the position.
Martin gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Pu is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Martin sees it coming and defends easily.
Martin is looking to control Pu's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Martin avoid being mounted?

Pu is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Martin defends it well.
Martin trying to control but Pu postures up.

Martin is looking to improve his position.
Pu tries to pass the half guard into mount. Martin knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Martin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Pu sitting and controlling from the half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Pu takes a jab right on the kisser.
Pu throws a head kick but Martin moves out of range.

A head kick by Pu misses

and Martin holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Martin goes for a takedown in the clinch but Pu prevents it.
Martin is trying to pull guard but Pu turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Pu pulls guard.
Pu trying to keep a closed guard but Martin is proving a slippery customer.

Pu pushes Martin off and gets back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pu connects with a solid leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zang Pu dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Arron Martin's cut.
That's time! Martin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Pu lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Martin circles away quickly and effectively.
Martin has a takedown stuffed.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Pu is defended easily by Martin.
Pu lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Pu forces Martin back against the cage and clinches.
Pu drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Martin gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Pu has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Martin breaks from the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pu misses with a head kick.
Pu with a nice cross.
Martin shoots in and drives through. Pu sprawls well.

Pu feints and as Martin raises his hands in defense, Pu changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pu controlling from the top position.
Martin tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Martin working for submissions but it's allowed Pu to get to half guard.
Pu seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Martin wants to get back to full guard.
Martin is looking to control Pu's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Martin avoid being mounted?
Martin preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Pu not doing much here.
Martin is trying to get back to full guard.

Pu is nestled in close to Martin, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Martin gets full guard.
Pu trying to control the position from guard on top but Martin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Pu is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Pu got a little sloppy there for a moment and Martin has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pu has managed to get both his arms back between Martin's legs - danger averted.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Pu wants to control from the top but Martin keeps moving.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Martin wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Pu throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Pu throws a head kick but Martin moves out of range.
Pu looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Martin is fending him off so far but Pu persists. Nope, Martin circles away and we're back to standing.
Arron Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Zang Pu.
Pu pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Pu throws a lazy body kick
enabling Martin to counter with a crisp jab.
Martin throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pu misses with a head kick.
Pu throws a head kick but Martin moves out of range.
Pu tries for a takedown but Martin sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zang Pu showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Pu moves into the clinch.
Pu trying to land knees to the body.

Pu breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Martin wants to break free but Pu has control.

Pu's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Martin tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pu paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Zang Pu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pu throws a sloppy head kick and Martin moves out of range easily.
Pu is trying hard to land a takedown here. Martin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Zang Pu seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Martin throws a series of punches but Pu moves out of range.
Pu takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Martin shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Martin distracts Pu with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Pu wants to stand up but Martin is controlling him.
Martin postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Martin throws a big right hand that misses.
Martin lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Zang Pu has got the better of the ground game so far.
Martin working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Martin throws a big elbow that misses.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Martin loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Martin tries to keep at a distance but Pu has taken the fight into the clinch.
Pu wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Martin is trying to break the clinch but Pu is controlling him.
Martin jumps guard but Pu stands there with Martin around his waist. Martin gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Martin is trying to force a seperation but Pu has the dominant position.

Pu pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Pu throws a body punch but Martin moves out of range.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Martin avoids the head kick by Pu.
Martin takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Pu avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Pu fails to land the takedown.
Martin will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Martin avoids the head kick by Pu.
Pu throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Martin tries to clinch but Pu is having none of it.
Horrible takedown attempt by Martin or perhaps it was just good defense by Pu, which made it look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Arron Martin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Martin closes the distance and clinches up with Pu, looking for a takedown. Martin pushes Pu against the cage but Pu circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Pu shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Martin as he avoids it easily.
Martin dives in and grabs Pu's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pu pushes down on Martin's head and hops out.
Pu tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Pu darts in and clinches Martin up against the cage.
Pu jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Martin walks away with a smile on his face. Pu gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Martin wants to clinch.
Pu throws a leg kick but Martin sees it coming and moves out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Zang Pu comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Pu has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
