PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Paul Alexander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Staph Aureus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Staph Aureus will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Alexander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Staph Aureus!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Wesley Smith and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alexander misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Aureus tries to clinch but Alexander is having none of it.
Alexander misses with a jab, cross combination.

Aureus rushes Alexander and presses him up against the cage.

Aureus is pressed up against the cage. Alexander has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Aureus down to the mat. Aureus avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Alexander wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Aureus, who protects the arm well.
Aureus takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Aureus is looking to reverse the position.
Aureus told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Aureus is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Alexander throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alexander scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Aureus to see if he's OK.

Alexander goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Aureus rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Alexander's guard! Nice work there by Aureus!
Alexander is looking to sweep but instead, Aureus has passed into half guard.

Alexander has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Aureus is working away from the top position though.
Aureus working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Aureus lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Alexander manages to get to full guard.
Aureus chips away with some ground and pound.

Alexander working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Aureus doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Aureus manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Alexander escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Aureus gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Paul Alexander will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Staph Aureus showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
