PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Lamar Yates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kurt Angle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lamar Yates has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Lamar Yates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Kurt Angle!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, James Atkins and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Angle looking to score a takedown here. Yates is defending well but Angle drives through and ends up in Yates's guard.
Yates will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Yates avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Angle controls from within his opponent's guard.
Angle is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Yates is trying to control the position but Angle postures up.
Angle wants to control from the top but Yates keeps moving.
Angle slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Let's hope that Angle has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Angle will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
No joy there for Angle, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Angle is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Yates's half guard.
Yates tries to roll over but Angle keeps him under control.
Yates is looking to control Angle's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Yates avoid being mounted?

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Angle controlling the action here.
Yates wants to control but Angle is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Yates makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Yates.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Yates not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Yates striking off his back but it's not causing Angle any problems.

Angle shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Yates wants to sweep but no luck.
Yates has his hands on Angle's head, controlling the position.
Angle scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Yates throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Angle postures up in Yates's guard and throws a big left but Yates blocks it.
Angle trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Angle is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Yates has his hands on Angle's head, controlling the position.

Angle bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
You can see the frustration on Yates's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

That's time! Yates's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Angle moves into the clinch successfully.

Angle's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Yates tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Angle wants to get back to striking at distance but Yates won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Angle drags the fight down to the ground.

Yates throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Angle works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Yates trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Yates postures up in Angle's guard and throws a big left but Angle blocks it.

Angle is wriggling around but Yates manages to pass to half guard.
Yates working over Angle with some ground and pound. Angle looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Yates connects with a nice short shot to Angle's temple.
Angle is doing well to control the position and prevent Yates from advancing to side control.
Angle really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Yates. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Yates seems to be working for a kimura but Angle defends the submission attempt.

Yates thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Angle gets full guard.
Angle keeping moving, preventing Yates from controlling successfully.
Angle tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Yates closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Angle's guard.
Yates missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Yates has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Angle throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Angle is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Yates won't allow Angle to sweep him here.

Angle isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Yates stacks Angle on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Yates!
Angle gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Angle is breathing heavily.

Yates landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Angle is doing well to control the position and prevent Yates from advancing to side control.
Yates is nestled in close to Angle, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Angle is controlling Yates's trapped leg to prevent Yates from advancing to side control.

Yates is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Angle is just riding it out for now. Yates eventually gives up the hold.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Angle gets the takedown into side control.
Yates is trying to control Angle's posture but Angle avoids it.
Angle wants to lay and pray for a moment but Yates keeps working.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Angle scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Yates to see if he's OK.

Angle looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Yates is looking to regain half guard here but Angle keeps moving and retains side control.
Angle remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Angle is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Yates has escaped the position, nice work there.
Yates can't do much from the bottom here.
Yates is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Angle is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
I wouldn't like to be where Yates is right now.
Yates is looking for a sweep.
Yates is not content to let Angle control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Angle fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Yates, pushing him back against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Yates throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Angle blocks it with crossed arms.

Angle has hold of one of Yates's legs. Yates is fighting the takedown attempt but Angle gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Angle has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Yates thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Angle not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Kurt Angle comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Angle has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
