Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jonathan Thor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Matthews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Thor comes to the cage accompanied by Boom - P.O.D. Mike Matthews has the eye of the tiger tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Mike Matthews!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Paul Tew and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matthews throws out a leg kick but Thor moves out of range and Matthews only half commits.
Matthews throws a body kick that misses.
Thor throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Matthews connects with the punch.
A punch combination from Matthews misses.
Matthews throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Thor.
Thor throws a leg kick but Matthews sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Thor throws a low kick but it's checked well by Matthews.

and Thor decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Matthews's guard.
We've been hearing good reports from Thor's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Matthews working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

It looks like Matthews might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Thor connects with a leg kick. Matthews looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Thor will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Matthews changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Thor tries to avoid it but Matthews manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Thor to the ground. Thor escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Jonathan Thor has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Matthews.

That was a close round but I would say that Jonathan Thor will probably get the nod.

Thor is really struggling to find his range with his punches. Matthews's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

Matthews is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Thor is stalling here. Matthews is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Thor seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Matthews has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Thor tries to land a front kick but Matthews steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Matthews does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Thor is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Thor lands a nice short elbow.
Thor passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Matthews!
Matthews wants to hold on but Thor pushes him away.

Thor lands with some strikes.
Thor with shots to the head and body - Matthews looks very uncomfortable down there.
Thor lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Matthews is desperately trying to improve his position but Thor has a good base and remains in mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
