PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kum Chol Kang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and TJ Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Kum Chol Kang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, TJ Grant!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Sandra Marshall and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Grant shoots in and gets a takedown into Kang's guard.
Grant postures up in Kang's guard and throws a big left but Kang blocks it.
Grant looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Kang working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Grant.
Grant throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kang works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Grant stopping the sweep attempt from Kang.
Kang keeping moving, preventing Grant from controlling successfully.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Grant missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Grant closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kang's guard.

Kang on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Kang tries to get out of the position.
Kang has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Grant has passed into side control.
Grant lands an elbow.

Grant is putting a hurting on Kang here, landing some big shots from side control.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Grant connects with a nice short shot to Kang's temple.

Kang preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Grant misses with a head shot. Kang uses the momentum to regain guard.
Kang tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Kang looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Grant passes into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

TJ Grant dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Grant throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Grant shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Kang manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Kang wants to sweep but no luck.
Grant has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Grant postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Grant stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kang swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Grant shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kang's guard.
Grant won't allow Kang to sweep him here.

Grant lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Grant throws a strike but Kang avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Grant is working Kang over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

TJ Grant showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Kang instigates a clinch.

Grant has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kang uses from the top position.
Grant is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kang is looking to work some ground and pound but Grant has wrist control.
Grant looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kang is one step ahead there.
Kang passes Grant's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Kang thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Grant's head.

Kang is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Grant is just riding it out for now. Kang eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kang postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Kang working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Grant's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Grant is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Grant is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Grant is trying to keep Kang in close.

Grant fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kang manages to avoid it.

Grant advances position into side control!
Kang is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Grant has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Kang tries to improve position but can't.
Grant throwing strikes but Kang manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Grant sneaks back into half guard.
Grant is looking for a sweep. Kang is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Kum Chol Kang.
I think Grant has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
