PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Julian Casablancas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Materson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Casablancas's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Gers Pardoel - Bagagedrager ft. Sef . I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Julian Casablancas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 18 - 0, fighting out of London, Mike Materson!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, William Gold and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Casablancas displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Materson.
Casablancas misses with a low kick.
Materson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Materson shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Casablancas defends it nicely.
Casablancas throws a sloppy head kick and Materson moves out of range easily.
Materson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Julian Casablancas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Materson.
Casablancas does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Materson shoots in looking for a takedown but Casablancas manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Materson's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Materson feints and as Casablancas raises his hands in defense, Materson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Casablancas pulls Materson in close to prevent any damage.

Materson drops back looking for a leg! Casablancas is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Casablancas manages to kick Materson off! Materson jumps back into Casablancas's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Casablancas has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Materson tries to free his leg and advance position but Casablancas is retaining full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Casablancas is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Materson uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Casablancas.

Materson shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Casablancas manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Casablancas manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Materson manages to get himself to full guard.

Casablancas passes easily into side control. Nice work.

This is a sustained period of stalling by Casablancas.
Materson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Casablancas wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Casablancas is staying tight to Materson's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Casablancas's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Casablancas continues to hold on tight.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Materson is trying to get back to half guard.
Materson is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Casablancas has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Casablancas is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Materson will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Casablancas passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Materson!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Materson takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.

Casablancas rushes Materson and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Casablancas is pressed up against the cage. Materson has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Casablancas down to the mat. Casablancas avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Casablancas throws a nice outside leg kick.
Materson misses with a takedown attempt - Casablancas sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Materson gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Casablancas swings for the body but Materson moves out of range.
Materson shoots in looking for a takedown. Casablancas tries to sprawl out of it but Materson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Casablancas manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Julian Casablancas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Materson.
Materson looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Materson shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Materson seems to have recovered his senses.
I was talking to Casablancas's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Casablancas throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Materson blocks it with crossed arms.

Materson has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Casablancas after a bit of a struggle.

Julian Casablancas decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
