Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Colin St John (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Reijo Rento (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). St John kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Uilleann Pipes. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Reijo Rento!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Richard Clark and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
St John lands a jab to the head.
St John misses with an uppercut. Rento saw that one coming.

St John shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Rento wants to improve his position but St John is controlling well.
St John lands with a punch from half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rento slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
St John stopping the sweep attempt from Rento.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
St John chips away with some ground and pound.
St John throws a big elbow that misses.
Rento looking to hit a scissor sweep but St John is one step ahead there.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Rento holds on and takes a little breather.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Rento keeping moving, preventing St John from controlling successfully.

Rento can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as St John controls the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
St John thuds a left hand into Rento's body.
St John loads up on a big right hand but Rento slips the punch.
St John swats away the attempt to clinch by Rento.
St John changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from St John is defended easily by Rento.

Rento motions for St John to come forward. Rento throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Rento lands a left and a right that send St John crashing to the mat, dazed. Rento thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


It looks like Colin St John has been cut.
St John moves out of range of the body kick from Rento.
Rento is looking to clinch but St John is avoiding it.
Rento tries to clinch but St John moves out of range.

Rento closes the distance and clinches.
Rento goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Rento lands an uppercut.
Rento misses with a punch on the inside.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rento lands a damaging elbow.
Rento trying to control the position but instead, St John has worked for underhooks and has pushed Rento into the cage.
Rento lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.


St John is rocked!


Colin St John's cut is getting worse.
Rento pushes off an throws an elbow but St John leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

St John lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Rento told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
St John is looking to take a break and control but Rento is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rento is looking to improve his position.
Rento is still trying to improve position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
St John drops an elbow to the side of Rento's head.
Rento manages to get to full guard.
St John chips away with some ground and pound.
Rento is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rento manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. St John manages to get himself to full guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Reijo Rento will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


St John lands with a shot to the body.
St John stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and St John wants it to stay on the feet.
St John changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Rento will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Rento tries to clinch there but St John circles away.
St John misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Rento.
St John throws a body shot but no joy.
St John throws a quick inside leg kick.
Reijo Rento seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Rento pivots, looking for a leg kick but St John is out of range and Rento settles back down.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
St John lands a right hook to the body.
Rento shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has St John pinned against the cage. St John gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Rento.
Colin St John has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Reijo Rento.

Rento fails in his attempt to clinch.
St John is looking to wear down Rento with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
The fight stays on the outside here - Rento looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Rento stuffs the takedown attempt from St John. St John gets slowly back to his feet.
Rento connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed St John momentarily.
Rento tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. St John manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Rento throws a nice outside leg kick.
St John lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Rento closes this distance looking for a takedown but St John circles away.

St John appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

St John closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
St John has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Rento.

St John has hold of Rento's arm. He needs to escape this position sooner or later but for now he's happy enough to control the position and prevent the submission attempts.

Rento is trying to stick to St John's back but St John is turning into Rento. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Rento's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by St John.

Rento bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in St John's guard.

St John is trying to control the position but Rento postures up.

and Rento counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Rento shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as St John sprawls well. St John wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Rento gets slowly back to his feet.
Rento tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
St John misses the shot to the body.
Rento darts in looking for a takedown but St John gets double underhooks and turns Rento into the cage.
St John looks to land a right hand but Rento moved out of range.
Rento misses with a low kick.
Rento shoots in for a takedown but St John shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Colin St John has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Reijo Rento.
Rento takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Rento walks into a left hand.
St John tries for a takedown but Rento sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Rento takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Rento chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before St John can pounce on him.
St John misses with a wild body shot.
St John swings for the body but Rento moves out of range.
St John misses with a looping right.
St John just misses with a punch to the body.
Rento fails in his attempt to clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

St John closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rento's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
St John wants to control from the top but Rento keeps moving.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Colin St John.
I think St John has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
