Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Carlos Alberto Alessio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Cecil Peabody and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith digs a good hook to Alessio's body.
Smith throws a nice inside leg kick.
Smith's coach down at KY GYM was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Smith's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Alessio takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Alessio's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Smith connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Alessio scrambles back to his feet.
Alessio swings and misses with a hook to the body.
The fighters circle momentarily. Smith darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Smith steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Alessio.
Smith let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alessio fails with the takedown.

Smith throws a head kick that misses.
Alessio shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense.
A countering left hand to the body from Smith misses.
Alessio takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alessio shoots and misses
and Alessio takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Alessio tries for a takedown but Smith sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Alessio slips a jab and a cross from Smith.
Smith fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

and Alessio counters with a takedown into side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Alessio tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Alessio is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Smith is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
A bit of a lull in the action here.

Alessio is trying to get an arm triangle but Smith is defending well.

Smith is trying to control Alessio's posture but Alessio avoids it.
Smith tries to buck Alessio off but Alessio is having none of it.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alessio. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Alessio wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Smith, who protects the arm well.
Alessio looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Alessio looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Alessio tries to stand but Smith is controlling his head.
Smith tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Alessio wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Alessio is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smith is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Alessio is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Smith works Alessio's body with a nice hook.
Smith scores with the left hand. Alessio knows he should have avoided that one.
Alessio will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Alessio throws the left hand but Smith avoids the punch easily.
Smith changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.

Smith forces Alessio back against the cage and clinches.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Alessio is pushing Smith up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Alessio changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Smith fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Alessio tries to keep at a distance but Smith has taken the fight into the clinch.
Smith doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Alessio is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Smith pulls him back up using the underhooks.

It looks like Carlos Alberto Alessio has been cut.
Smith lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Alessio backwards.
Alessio has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Smith avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
A nice right hand lands inside from Smith.
Smith lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Smith controlling the action here for a moment.
Smith misses with a punch to the body.

Smith lands a big right hand that sends Alessio to the canvas! This could be the beginning of the end for Alessio!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Alessio wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.

Alessio wants to control but Smith is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Alessio is trying to get back to full guard.
Smith slips a nice elbow through Alessio's hands, connecting with Alessio's forehead.
Alessio is trying to control but Smith manages to pass to mount!
Alessio tries to reverse the position but Smith maintains control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Smith digs a right hand underneath Alessio's ribcage. Alessio let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Smith pushes Alessio back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Smith tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Smith throws a head kick that misses.

Alessio takes one on the button.

Smith fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Alessio looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Smith scores with a jab to the body.
Smith is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Alessio rather than just go for the knockout.
Smith throws a body kick that misses.
Smith closes the distance and lands a one-two.
A shot to the liver by Smith. Beautiful body shot.
Smith lands a slapping body shot.
Smith scores with a shot to the body.

Smith lands a really nice looking cross but Alessio seems unphased.
Carlos Alberto Alessio has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Smith closes the distance and lands a brutal uppercut that knocks Alessio out! We're looking at the replay now - he was out before he hit the floor!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:35 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). John Smith!
