Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Phil Mendes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Aleixo Gene!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Luis Engracia and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gene fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Mendes cracks a nice hook into Gene's ribs.
Mendes steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Gene. That one must have hurt.
Gene looks to score with a jab to the body but Mendes is just out of range.
Gene fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Mendes has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Gene connects with the punch.
It looks like Phil Mendes has been cut.
Aleixo Gene seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gene throws a lazy right hand but Mendes sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Gene bobbing and weaving well here. And he's unloaded with a massive right hand that drops Mendes! He dives into his guard looking to finish!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gene pushes down on Mendes's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Mendes knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gene on the ground.
Gene throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Mendes tries to get to full guard but Gene has control of the leg.
Mendes is refusing to be controlled, as Gene sits in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendes wants to improve his position but Gene is controlling well.
Gene not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Mendes blocking the ground and pound attempt from Gene.
Gene wants to take a breather but Mendes is having none of it.
Mendes avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Gene.
Gene moves nicely into side control.
Mendes is trying to control Gene's posture but Gene avoids it.
Mendes tries to buck Gene off but Gene is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mendes tries to control but Gene manages to take his back.
Gene wants to control but Mendes is keeping busy.
Well, with Gene on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Mendes is tapping out... Can he escape the position?
Gene has the hooks in. Mendes is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Mendes could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gene misses with a punch to the head.
Gene has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Mendes is defending well but eventually Gene manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Mendes has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!
