Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 18 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dennis Oppelaar!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hunter Thompson!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thompson dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Oppelaar. That did some damage!

Oppelaar bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Thompson is looking for a sweep.
Oppelaar fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Oppelaar sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Thompson is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
We've been hearing good reports from Oppelaar's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Thompson tries to buck Oppelaar off but Oppelaar is having none of it.

Oppelaar creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Thompson sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Oppelaar tries to move to mount but Thompson blocks the move with his legs.
Thompson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Oppelaar wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Thompson throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!

Thompson ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Oppelaar moves away.

and Thompson counters with a nice uppercut.

Oppelaar throws a series of punches but Thompson moves out of range.
Oppelaar tries a head kick but it misses.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Thompson! But no joy.
Oppelaar shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Thompson sprawls well. Thompson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Oppelaar gets slowly back to his feet.

Thompson has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Oppelaar closes the distance and clinches up with Thompson, looking for a takedown. Oppelaar pushes Thompson against the cage but Thompson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Thompson lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Oppelaar misses with a looping left.
Thompson lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Thompson wants to improve his position but Oppelaar is controlling well.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Thompson is doing well to control the position and prevent Oppelaar from advancing to side control.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Thompson tries to roll over but Oppelaar keeps him under control.

Thompson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Thompson.

Thompson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Thompson is on top in guard.

Oppelaar shoots in looking for a takedown. Thompson tries to sprawl out of it but Oppelaar keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Thompson manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Thompson keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Oppelaar tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
A little jabbing left from Thompson on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Thompson leaves Oppelaar with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Thompson lands a really nice looking cross but Oppelaar seems unphased.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Thompson's corner calls for a 1-2. Thompson obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Oppelaar throws a head kick that misses.
Oppelaar throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Thompson's waist but Thompson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Oppelaar off to one side.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Thompson lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Oppelaar takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Oppelaar shoots in looking for a takedown but Thompson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Oppelaar's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Hunter Thompson seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Oppelaar throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Thompson counters with a good, hard body kick but Oppelaar shrugs it off.
Oppelaar slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Thompson pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Thompson drops Oppelaar with a straight left! Oh this is bad for Oppelaar! Thompson dives in and starts dropping bombs - the referee has no choice but to step in and save him!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Hunter Thompson!

Hunter Thompson was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
