Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Maurice Helms!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Jones!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Bruno Lombardi and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones scores with a takedown into Helms's guard.
Jones is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Helms is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jones passes easily into side control. Nice work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones is trying to get an arm triangle but Helms is defending well.
Jones wants to control but Helms is keeping him busy.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Jones wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Helms, who protects the arm well.
Helms knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Jones on the ground.

Jones tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Jones staying calm.
Helms might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Jones tries to advance to mount but Helms denies him.

Jones works to advance to full mount. Helms defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Jones tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Helms is breathing heavily.
Helms is trying to escape the mount but Jones keeps good control and instead manages to take Helms's back.
Helms is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
It looks like Jones might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Jones is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Helms has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Jones has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Helms taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Jones doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:27 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). John Jones!
During a confident post fight interview, John Jones thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
