PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joe Calzaghe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arman Shaker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Calzaghe comes into the arena with The Pride of Wales blaring out of the sound system. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 19 - 1, fighting out of London, Joe Calzaghe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Arman Shaker!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Anni Minnemäki and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaker misses with a head kick.
Calzaghe looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Calzaghe feints a jab promting Shaker to slip. Calzaghe then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Shaker slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Calzaghe swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Calzaghe slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Shaker shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Calzaghe counters with a straight right hand.
Calzaghe scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Shaker lands a leg kick that knocks Calzaghe off balance momentarily.
Shaker throws a leg kick but Calzaghe sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Shaker feints and as Calzaghe raises his hands in defense, Shaker changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Calzaghe lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Calzaghe loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Calzaghe is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shaker looking for a guillotine here but Calzaghe defends easily.

Shaker is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Shaker escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Calzaghe gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Shaker wants to sweep here but Calzaghe controlling him for the moment.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shaker not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Calzaghe is looking to work some ground and pound but Shaker has wrist control.
Calzaghe wants to control from the top but Shaker keeps moving.
Calzaghe postures up in Shaker's guard and throws a big left but Shaker blocks it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

letting Calzaghe counter with a right hand.
Calzaghe connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Calzaghe tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Shaker was well out of range. Poor timing from Calzaghe.

A frustrated look appears on Calzaghe's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Calzaghe keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Joe Calzaghe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arman Shaker.
Shaker tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Shaker throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Calzaghe was covering up waiting for the punch and Shaker finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Shaker got a little sloppy there for a moment and Calzaghe has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shaker has managed to get both his arms back between Calzaghe's legs - danger averted.

Shaker postures up in Calzaghe's guard and throws a big left but Calzaghe blocks it.
My spies in Grappling Pro Helsinki inform me that Shaker has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Calzaghe is trying to control the position but Shaker postures up.
Shaker throws a big elbow that misses.
Shaker won't allow Calzaghe to sweep him here.
Shaker seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Shaker missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Shaker lands a couple of digs.
Calzaghe is trying to hold Shaker in close to prevent damage but Shaker has managed to pass into half guard.

Shaker looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Calzaghe is trying to stand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Calzaghe dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Shaker throws a sloppy head kick
and Calzaghe counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Shaker shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Calzaghe as he avoids it easily.
Calzaghe swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Shaker throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Shaker misses with a looping right.
Shaker throws a head kick but Calzaghe moves out of range.
It looked like Calzaghe was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Shaker.
Shaker looks to throw a body kick
and Calzaghe counters with a nice body shot.
Arman Shaker seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Calzaghe goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Shaker misses with a head kick.
Calzaghe avoids the head kick by Shaker.
A big left from Shaker misses.
Shaker does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Calzaghe scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Calzaghe fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shaker manages to avoid it.

Calzaghe fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Shaker closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Calzaghe fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Shaker looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Shaker dives in and grabs Calzaghe's left leg, looking for a takedown. Calzaghe pushes down on Shaker's head and hops out.
A little feinted left hand from Calzaghe on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Shaker shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Calzaghe as he avoids it easily.

Calzaghe stuffs the takedown attempt from Shaker. Shaker gets slowly back to his feet.
Shaker is breathing heavily.
Shaker tries a head kick but it misses.
Calzaghe connects with a jab.
Shaker takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Calzaghe is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shaker can do to turn this around?
Calzaghe moves out of range as Shaker strikes.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Calzaghe scores with a hook to the body. Shaker takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Shaker throws a quick inside leg kick.
Arman Shaker is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Calzaghe counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Shaker is still on wobbly legs! Can Calzaghe finish him?
Calzaghe lands a hook that stumbles Shaker back into the cage. Calzaghe follows up with a straight and another hook that land right on the button, dropping Shaker to the canvas! Calzaghe pounces and lands several unanswered shots - Shaker has had enough and taps out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:27 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Joe Calzaghe!
