PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Antonio Vegata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kenny Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomi has chosen Slaap lekker! as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Antonio Vegata!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 36 - 26 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kenny Gomi!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Luis Engracia and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vegata misses with a kick to the body
and Gomi cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Vegata misses with a hook.
Gomi tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Vegata throws a jab but it's blocked by Gomi.
Gomi tries to counter with a clinch but Vegata shakes him off and moves away.
Vegata misses with a low kick as Gomi jumps back.
Vegata misses with a few strikes there.
It seemed like Gomi was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Vegata lands a glancing blow to the side of Gomi's head.
Vegata throws a right and a left that Gomi avoids nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gomi looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Vegata is looking to land body kicks.
Gomi wants to counter with a clinch but Vegata pushes him away.

Vegata fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Gomi is out of range.
Gomi's coach down at Franklin D. Bluth Memorial Supergym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Gomi's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Gomi avoids a kick to the body.
Gomi only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Gomi fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Gomi will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Vegata throws a wild body kick that Gomi sees coming a mile off.

Gomi tries a quick counter leg kick but Vegata is wise to it.
Vegata throws a jab but it's blocked by Gomi.

and Gomi counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Vegata keeping moving, preventing Gomi from controlling successfully.
Vegata wants to sweep but no luck.
Vegata is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Gomi misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Vegata wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gomi keeps working.
Gomi has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Vegata is working away from the top position though.

Still in half guard, Vegata seems content to control.
Gomi wants to control but Vegata is keeping busy.
Gomi wants to improve his position but Vegata is controlling well.
Vegata seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Gomi is trying to get back to full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Vegata misses with a hook to the body

and Gomi counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Gomi.

Gomi goes for a double leg but Vegata avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the ropes as Vegata continues to drive forward.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Vegata wants to control but instead Gomi manages to regain half guard.
Gomi has a hand on Vegata's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Vegata takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Vegata is trying to stand up but he's being controlled by his opponent.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gomi is squirming around, avoiding Vegata's attempts to control the action.
