PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Earl Vespa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dante West (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Earl Vespa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dante West!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vespa on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by West. West obviously looking to wear him down.
Vespa shoots in and drives through. West sprawls well.
Vespa will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Vespa fails in his attempt to clinch.
West stuffs the takedown.
West throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
West digs a good hook to Vespa's body.
Vespa wants to clinch.
Vespa slips a jab and a cross from West.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vespa looks to land a combination but West avoids it well.
West fails with an attempt to clinch.

and Vespa counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for West!

Vespa throws some wild stikes that West manages to avoid easily.

Vespa stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

West has taken the fight to the clinch.

Vespa manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Vespa looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Vespa is trying to control the position but West postures up.

Vespa has his foot on West's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. West works his way back into a safe position though.
West must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
West throws a left and a right that both miss

and Vespa counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Vespa prevents West from standing back up.
West is trying to maintain the position but Vespa is very close to passing his half guard.
Vespa seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but West does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Vespa is really struggling to control West but he's trying to hold on to the position.
West controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
West is trying to stand up here but Vespa is controlling him well.
West is trying to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Earl Vespa dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Vespa takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

and West counters with a two punch combo.
West thuds his right hand into Vespa's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Vespa tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

West breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Vespa fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Earl Vespa is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

West darts in and clinches Vespa up against the cage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

West breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Vespa does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
West fails to land with a series of punches.
A right-left combo lands from West.
Vespa closes this distance looking for a takedown but West circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Earl Vespa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Vespa takes a shot to the body in his stride.
West is looking to slow Vespa down with leg kicks.
Vespa shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says West as he avoids it easily.

West moves into the clinch successfully.

West breaks the clinch.
Vespa swats away the attempt to clinch by West.
West lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Vespa dodges the punch combination from West.

West clinches up with Vespa and pushes him back against the cage.
West throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Vespa wants to get back to striking at distance but West won't allow it.
West tries to break the clinch but Vespa is controlling the position.

West scores a nice knee to the body.

West is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Vespa wants to break the clinch but can't.

West escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Vespa fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Vespa prevents West from breaking the clinch.
West is trying to break free.
West wants to break free but Vespa has control.
Vespa tries to pull guard but West holds him up against the cage and eventually Vespa drops back down to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Vespa fails with the takedown
and West counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

West fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Vespa, pushing him back against the cage.
West has had enough of the clinch but Vespa keeps him there for the moment.
Vespa managing to block the knees to the body from West.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dante West showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Vespa has a takedown stuffed.
West will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Earl Vespa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
West wants to clinch up but Vespa keeps it at a distance.
Vespa closes the distance but West moves to the side
and West counters with a lovely straight right hand!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A combination from West does no damage.
Vespa looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

West gets in close and instigates a clinch.
West has had enough of the clinch but Vespa keeps him there for the moment.

West can't break the clinch.
West wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
West throws a knee to the head but misses.
Vespa misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from West.
Vespa is trying to drag West to the mat but West just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Earl Vespa. That's going to take a lot out of him.

West breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
West tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
West throws a lazy head kick

and Vespa counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for West!
West tries to hold on but Vespa postures up.
West is looking to improve his position but Vespa isn't that keen on the idea.

Vespa wants to control the pace but West is squirming around nicely.
West sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
West is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Vespa is looking to advance position but West won't allow it.

West kicks off Vespa and gets to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Dante West.
I think West has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
