PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Gustavo Borges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vince Run (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Gustavo Borges has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Gustavo Borges!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Vince Run!
The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Santiago Holmes and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Borges lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Run circles away quickly and effectively.
Run tries to counter with a clinch but Borges shakes him off and moves away.
Borges lands with a cross.
Borges shoots in and drives through. Run sprawls well.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Borges crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Run - the referee stops the clock and Borges gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Run. Borges manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Run looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Run is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Borges has managed to free his arm - good work.
Run takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Run throwing shots but Borges is blocking nicely.
Borges regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Run.
Run wants to get up but he can't break Borges's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Borges looking for a guillotine here but Run defends easily.
Borges will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Run postures up in Borges's guard and throws a big left but Borges blocks it.

Borges has an active guard here but Run has managed to pass into half guard.
Run throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Run thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Run takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Run decides to stand and escape the position.
Borges dives in and grabs Run's left leg, looking for a takedown. Run pushes down on Borges's head and hops out.
Run throws a head kick but Borges moves out of range.

Run darts in and clinches Borges up against the cage.
Borges jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Run walks away with a smile on his face. Borges gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gustavo Borges. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Run changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Borges tries to avoid it but Run manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Borges to the ground. Borges escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Run tries to clinch but Borges is having none of it.
Borges tries to score a power double leg takedown but Run sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Borges somewhat.
Borges is breathing heavily.

Borges gets tackled into the cage by Run. Run maintains the clinch.
Run drops down looking for an ankle pick but Borges pulls his leg out and moves away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Run misses with a few strikes there.
Borges thuds his right hand into Run's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
A telegraphed right hand from Borges misses the target.
Borges cracks Run with a right hand to the side of the head.
Run darts in looking for a takedown but Borges gets double underhooks and turns Run into the cage.

Run rushes Borges and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Borges is trying to pull guard but Run turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Borges is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Run to keep the fight standing.
Borges tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Run smiles and moves away.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Run manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Borges on his heels. He'll look to pass Borges's guard now, I'm sure.
Borges keeping moving, preventing Run from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Run engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Run passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Run looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Borges prevents Run from moving into mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vince Run dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Run moves into range and clinches up with Borges.

Run breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Borges connects with a single shot there.
Borges fails with the takedown.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Run! But no joy.
Vince Run is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Run shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Borges pinned against the cage. Borges gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Run shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Borges is trying to defend but Run finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Borges is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Run's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Run's back!

Borges is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Run is defending well though. Borges let's go of the attempt for now.

Borges is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Run defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Borges is hanging on to Run's back as he tries to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Borges is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Borges gets his hands free as Run looks to control.
Run is really stuck here.
Borges really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Run is trying to get back to his feet but Borges has full control of the position and if anything, Run has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Borges working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Borges throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.

Borges is persistently looking for the submission but Run is defending it well.
Borges doesn't have the hooks in and Run manages to turn into his guard.

Run stands up from Borges's guard - Run perhaps looking for a knockout.
Borges shoots and misses

and Run counters by clinching up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Run stalling in the clinch.
Borges wants a takedown but no success here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gustavo Borges. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Run escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A head kick misses from Run.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Run shoots in but no luck this time.
Run comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Borges lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
The fight stays on the outside here - Run looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Run.
Borges tries to circle away but Run has him pinned against the cage.

Run manages to break the clinch.
Gustavo Borges seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Run keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Borges.

Run clinches up with Borges and pushes him back against the cage.
Borges gets underhooks to prevent Run's takedown attempt.

Borges manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Run wants to control from the top but Borges keeps moving.

Run drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Borges manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Run has Borges in his guard.

Run wants to sweep here but Borges controlling him for the moment.
Vince Run has got the better of the ground game so far.
Run not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gustavo Borges will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Run slips under a jab from Borges.
Run tries to score a power double leg takedown but Borges sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Run somewhat.
Borges lands a head shot.
Borges looks to land a right hand but Run moved out of range.

Borges gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Run pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Borges is keeping the position for now.

Run got a little sloppy there for a moment and Borges has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Run has managed to get both his arms back between Borges's legs - danger averted.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Run trying to control but Borges is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Run throwing strikes from guard but Borges blocks nicely.

Run has gone for a leg lock! Borges slips out almost immediately though and dives into Run's guard.


Borges is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Run is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Run has escaped and now he's on top!


Borges has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Run can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Run advances to half guard.
Run throws a strike but Borges avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Run wants to control from the top but Borges keeps moving.
Run looking to pass the guard.
Run sitting in guard, not really doing much.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Run trying to control the position from guard on top but Borges is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Run has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Borges is proving hard to escape from.
Borges keeping moving, preventing Run from controlling successfully.

Borges looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Run has picked Borges up and slammed him! Borges can't keep hold of the triangle and Run manages to pass to side control!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Run trying to control the position but Borges is working away.
Run in side control lands a decent elbow.
Run trying to control the action but Borges is working from the bottom.
Borges tries to bench press Run off him but Run keeps the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Run clinches up with Borges and pushes him back against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Vince Run comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Run has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
