PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Chester Tate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dion Watts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chester Tate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dion Watts!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Jonathan Paton and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tate looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Watts!
Tate working the ground and pound.
Tate controlling the position.
Watts throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.
Watts is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Tate is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Watts is looking to improve his position but Tate isn't that keen on the idea.

Tate looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Tate wants to control the pace but Watts is squirming around nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Watts is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Tate is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Watts is wriggling around trying to escape.
Tate could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Tate looking to control and managing it successfully.
Watts is in all sorts of trouble here.

Watts wants to control but Tate is having none of it.

Watts is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Watts tries to lock up and control but Tate gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Tate working for a submission but Watts is keeping him at bay.

Tate is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Tate seems to be looking for submissions.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tate lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Watts regains full guard. Nicely done.
Watts controls Tate momentarily but Tate frees himself.
Watts is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Watts thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Watts has momentary wrist control but Tate slips an elbow through the middle.
Watts is trying to control the position but Tate postures up.
Tate is looking to stand up but Watts won't let him.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Watts drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Watts looks winded!
Watts creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Tate sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Tate is not content to let Watts control the position.
The referee asks Watts politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Watts prefers to stall for the moment though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Tate throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Tate loads up on a big right hand but Watts slips the punch.
Tate throws a left and a right that both miss
and Watts counters with a three punch combo that has Tate backing up. Tate nods at Watts to acknowledge the strikes.

Watts dives in and scores a takedown into Tate's guard.
Tate not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Watts tries to free his leg and advance position but Tate is retaining full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Tate wants to get back to his feet but Watts is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Watts working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Watts trying to move into half guard but instead Tate has managed to sweep!

Watts wants to sweep here but Tate controlling him for the moment.
Tate not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Chester Tate overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Tate drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Tate jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Tate trying to control the position from guard on top but Watts is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Watts manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Tate manages to get himself to full guard.

Watts is breathing heavily.

Watts throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Tate works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Watts is looking to work some ground and pound but Tate has wrist control.
Tate being controlled here, momentarily.
Watts trying to control but Tate is working from the bottom.
Tate has a closed guard, preventing Watts from standing up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Tate takes one on the button.

Watts drives through with a takedown into guard.
Watts wants to pass the guard but Tate is keeping the position.
Tate wants to sweep here but Watts controlling him for the moment.

Tate wants to stand and escape but Watts is having none of it.

Tate seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Tate keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Watts's head.
Tate works over Watts with some ground and pound from guard.

Watts is trying to keep Tate in close.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Watts can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Tate controls the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dion Watts showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Tate throws the left hand but Watts avoids the punch easily.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Tate enables Watts to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Tate manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Watts drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Tate manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Watts has Tate in his guard.

Watts takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Tate cracks Watts with a solid left hand.

Tate avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Tate not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Tate drops back looking for a leg! Watts is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Watts manages to kick Tate off! Tate jumps back into Watts's guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Watts slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Watts loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Watts is looking to stand up but Tate won't let him.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Watts slips under a jab.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Tate shoots in and bounces Watts off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Tate drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Tate jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Dion Watts.
I think Watts has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
