PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Darth Maul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Big Hoss (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Darth Maul!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Big Hoss!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Steven Brown and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some bone on bone action there as Maul checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Maul throws a big counter combination but Hoss scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Maul tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Hoss defends well and Maul ends up having to push Hoss into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Hoss appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

Hoss fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Maul, pushing him back against the cage.

Hoss successfully pulls guard.
Hoss looking to hit a scissor sweep but Maul is one step ahead there.

Hoss has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Maul can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Maul trying to control but Hoss is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hoss is pulling down on Maul's head to control his posture.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maul postures up.
Hoss wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Maul is now in half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Hoss manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Maul is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Maul won't allow Hoss to get back to his feet.
Maul trying to control but Hoss is working from the bottom.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Maul stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hoss swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Maul tries to sprawl but Hoss drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Maul gets back to full guard.

Maul working for a triangle but Hoss defends it easily.

Maul is looking for a triangle here but Hoss uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Maul is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maul tries to improve position but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hoss controls the position.

Hoss stands up.
Hoss lands a nice shot to the body.
Hoss fails to land the takedown.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hoss tries to clinch but Maul moves out of range.

Hoss looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Maul!
Hoss wants to lay and pray for a moment but Maul keeps working.

Hoss tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Maul tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hoss wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Big Hoss dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!



Hoss fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Maul to the ground. Hoss is now in Maul's guard.
Hoss wants to control from the top but Maul keeps moving.
Maul is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Hoss stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maul swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Maul striking off his back but it's not causing Hoss any problems.

Hoss trying to control but Maul is working from the bottom.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Hoss has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Maul is proving hard to escape from.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Hoss looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Maul is trying to maintain the position but Hoss is very close to passing his half guard.
Hoss wants to free his trapped foot but Maul is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Maul is refusing to be controlled, as Hoss sits in half guard.

Maul trying to control but Hoss postures up.
Maul is staying active underneath Hoss, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Hoss passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Maul!
Maul tries to lock up and control but Hoss gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hoss controlling from mount.
Maul can't escape the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Maul is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Hoss is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Maul can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Hoss controlling the pace for now.

Hoss get's back to his feet.

Maul moves into the clinch.
Maul has Hoss pressed against the cage, preventing Hoss from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maul working hard to break the clinch.

Hoss pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Maul tries to clinch up but Hoss circles away and keeps his distance.

and Maul counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Hoss darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Hoss seems to be looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Big Hoss showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Maul throws a series of punches but Hoss moves out of range.
Maul tries to close the distance and clinch but Hoss swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Maul enables Hoss to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Maul manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Hoss stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Maul doesn't manage to clinch there - Hoss circles away.

Hoss dives in and scores a takedown into Maul's guard.
Maul is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Hoss dives into side control.
I wouldn't like to be where Maul is right now.
The referee asks Hoss politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Hoss prefers to stall for the moment though.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maul takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Hoss in side control lands a decent elbow.
Hoss content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Maul sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Hoss keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Let's hope that Hoss has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Maul actively working from the bottom here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Maul is looking for a sweep. Hoss is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Still in half guard, Hoss seems content to control.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Hoss lands a nice short elbow.
Hoss controlling the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hoss seems to be looking for submissions.

Maul tries to kick Hoss off but Hoss keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Maul wants to land a leg kick but Hoss is out of range.

Hoss changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Maul looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Hoss in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Hoss decides to stand back up. Hoss steps back and let's Maul get back to his feet.
Hoss connects with a high kick.
Hoss misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Maul tries to clinch up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maul darts in looking for a takedown but Hoss gets double underhooks and turns Maul into the cage.
Hoss moves in looking to clinch but Maul pushes him off.
Maul throws a big counter combination but Hoss scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Maul is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Maul moves out of range of the body kick from Hoss.
Maul fails with the takedown.

Hoss shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Maul napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hoss looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Hoss has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hoss wants to stand but Maul is controlling his arm.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Big Hoss really dominated that round.

Maul tries to keep at a distance but Hoss has taken the fight into the clinch.
A nice left hand lands by Hoss.
Maul is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Hoss to keep the fight standing.
Hoss gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Maul.
Hoss doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hoss successfully pulls guard.
Maul wants to control from the top but Hoss keeps moving.
It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

Maul pushes down on Hoss's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Maul controlling the action here.
Hoss is looking to control Maul's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hoss avoid being mounted?
Maul has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Hoss tries to reverse the position but Maul maintains control.
Maul lands a big shot there that rocks Hoss but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Hoss is trying desperately to improve position.
Hoss tries to hold on but Maul postures up.

Hoss is in all sorts of trouble here.

Maul with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Maul avoids the attempt from Hoss to control.

Darth Maul had his way with Big Hoss in that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Maul misses with a wild body shot.
Hoss wants to counter the offense by Maul and move into the clinch position.
Maul misses with a takedown attempt - Hoss sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Hoss darts in and clinches Maul up against the cage.

Hoss jumps guard and drags Maul to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Big Hoss has got the better of the ground game so far.
Maul tries to free his leg and advance position but Hoss is retaining full guard.
Hoss pulls Maul in to control the position.

Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - a gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt.

Hoss stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maul swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Maul is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Hoss frees his head nicely. Oh but Maul has switched to an armbar! Hoss is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
