PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Craig Clifton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wrestler Savvy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Craig Clifton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Wrestler Savvy!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Fedor Mirinova and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Savvy tries to clinch there but Clifton circles away.

Savvy has taken the fight to the clinch.
Savvy throws a punch but it's blocked by Clifton.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Savvy.
Savvy misses with a hook from the clinch.
Savvy tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Clifton's elbow.
Clifton tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Savvy smiles and moves away.
Clifton is trying hard to land a takedown here. Savvy sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
As Clifton backs off Savvy throws a huge counter combo but Clifton manages to avoid it all.

Savvy has Clifton up against the cage in a clinch.
Clifton is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Craig Clifton. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stalling in the clinch from Savvy.
Clifton blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Savvy misses with a short punch on the inside.
Clifton blocks an uppercut.
Clifton's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Savvy gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Clifton regains guard.

Clifton looking to hit a scissor sweep but Savvy is one step ahead there.
Savvy is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Clifton working for a triangle but Savvy defends it easily.
Clifton seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Clifton tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Clifton is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Savvy is aware though and is defending well.
Savvy must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Clifton is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Clifton is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Savvy is aware though and is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Clifton has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Savvy has passed into side control.
A lull in the action here as Savvy stalls from top position.
Clifton is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Clifton gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Clifton gets full guard.

Clifton is looking for a triangle but Savvy pushes his legs off easily.
Savvy content to stall in guard here.

Clifton has an active guard here but Savvy has managed to pass into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Clifton is looking to improve his position.
Savvy is looking to take a break and control but Clifton is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Clifton is looking to control Savvy's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Clifton avoid being mounted?
Clifton makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Clifton.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Savvy is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wrestler Savvy dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Savvy fails in his attempt to clinch.
Clifton shoots in for a double leg but Savvy sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Clifton shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Savvy's guard.
Clifton slips nicely into half guard.
Clifton stalling away here and it's allowed Savvy to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Craig Clifton overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Clifton missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Clifton trying to control the position from guard on top but Savvy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Savvy can't keep his opponent in guard - Clifton advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Clifton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Savvy keeps working.
Savvy has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Clifton is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Savvy has managed to free his arm - good work.

Clifton is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Savvy is looking for a sweep. Clifton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Clifton trying to advance position but Savvy counters by regaining guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Savvy can do anything to dispel that myth.
Clifton passes Savvy's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Clifton content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Clifton trying to control from half guard but Savvy is working away.

Clifton seems to be looking for submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Savvy is staying active underneath Clifton, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Clifton is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Savvy is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Savvy wants to control but Clifton is keeping busy.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Savvy drives through and clinches with Clifton against the cage.
Clifton is trying to drag Savvy to the mat but Savvy just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
The referee is keeping an eye on Savvy - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Savvy tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Clifton jumps guard but Savvy turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Savvy struggles to land a body shot inside as Clifton controls his hands.
Clifton tries to pull guard but Savvy won't allow it.

Clifton shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Savvy really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Clifton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Clifton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Savvy swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Savvy keeping moving, preventing Clifton from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Craig Clifton dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Clifton gets tackled into the cage by Savvy. Savvy maintains the clinch.
Savvy lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Savvy works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Savvy avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Savvy throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Clifton works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Clifton wants to sweep here but Savvy controlling him for the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Savvy wants to pass the guard but Clifton is keeping the position.
Clifton is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Clifton is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Savvy sees it coming and defends easily.
Clifton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Savvy keeps working.

Clifton is working for a submission of some sort.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Clifton is keen to just control but Savvy is a slippery customer.

Savvy is defending against the submission attempts here by Clifton.
Savvy is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Clifton seems to be looking for submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Savvy is refusing to be controlled, as Clifton sits in half guard.

Clifton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Savvy defends it well.
Clifton is looking to take a break and control but Savvy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Clifton drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Savvy dives on top into guard.

Clifton is really struggling to control Savvy but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Clifton misses with a takedown attempt - Savvy sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

And that's the end of the fight!
Wrestler Savvy comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Savvy has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
