PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sang Carey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jakub Drwal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sang Carey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jakub Drwal!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Sergei Dronov and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Carey closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Drwal wants to get back to his feet but Carey drags him back down.

Carey tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Carey has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Carey wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Drwal, who protects the arm well.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Carey misses with a takedown attempt - Drwal sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Drwal throws a counter combo.

Carey fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Drwal to the ground. Carey is now in Drwal's guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Drwal holds on and takes a little breather.
Drwal trying to keep a closed guard but Carey is proving a slippery customer.
Carey wants to stand but Drwal is controlling his posture from full guard.

Carey lands a couple of digs.

Carey in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Carey wants to get up but he can't break Drwal's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Carey lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Drwal is looking to stand up but Carey isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Drwal is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Carey tries to get to full guard but Drwal has control of the leg.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Drwal not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Drwal looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Drwal is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carey is just riding it out for now. Drwal eventually gives up the hold.
Drwal is just content to waste time from the top position. Carey takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Carey really is a fat lump.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Sang Carey dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Drwal rushes Carey and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Carey has Drwal pressed against the cage, preventing Drwal from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Carey is working for takedown but Drwal is calmly controlling the position for now.

Drwal changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Carey fights it off and pushes away nicely.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Drwal is defended easily by Carey.
Jakub Drwal seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Drwal shoots for a double leg takedown but Carey sprawls well. He's pushed Drwal's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Carey lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Carey turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Carey goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Drwal rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Carey's guard! Nice work there by Drwal!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Drwal is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Drwal wants to stand and escape but instead Carey has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Carey might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Drwal is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


Carey fails to land the takedown.
Carey is trying hard to land a takedown here. Drwal sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Drwal raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Drwal shoots in for a takedown but Carey shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Carey throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Drwal's waist but Drwal gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Carey off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sang Carey. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Drwal goes for a double leg but Carey avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Carey continues to drive forward.
A counter left hand to the body from Carey misses its target.

Carey gets tackled into the cage by Drwal. Drwal maintains the clinch.

Carey goes for a takedown in the clinch but Drwal prevents it.
Carey jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Drwal walks away with a smile on his face. Carey gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Carey stuffs the takedown.
Carey looks for a takedown but Drwal sprawls well.
Drwal is looking for the big counter here.
Drwal darts in looking for a takedown but Carey gets double underhooks and turns Drwal into the cage.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Drwal can't do much from the bottom here.
Drwal sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Carey throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Carey tries to stand but can't do so whilst Drwal controls his leg.

Drwal wants to control but Carey is keeping busy.

Drwal is pressing down on Carey's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Carey wants to stand but Drwal is controlling his posture from full guard.
Drwal looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Carey drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Drwal manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Carey has Drwal in his guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Drwal not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Drwal tries to free his leg and advance position but Carey is retaining full guard.

Drwal wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Carey's closed guard. He's half up but Carey has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Carey pivots and extends the arm, Drwal falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Carey! Well done that man!
