PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tomas Edwards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Douglas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tomas Edwards!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tom Douglas!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Douglas forces Edwards back against the cage and clinches.
Knees to the body from Douglas.

Douglas drags the fight down to the ground.
Edwards postures up.

Edwards stands up from Douglas's guard - Edwards perhaps looking for a knockout.

Edwards rushes Douglas and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Edwards can't break the clinch.
Edwards drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Douglas gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Edwards stalling.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Douglas has had enough of the clinch but Edwards keeps him there for the moment.

Edwards jumps guard and drags Douglas to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Douglas wanted to stand there but Edwards had control of the position.

Edwards keeping full guard, as Douglas tries to pass.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Edwards has his foot on Douglas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Douglas works his way back into a safe position though.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Edwards is trying to keep Douglas in close.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Douglas looking to score a takedown here. Edwards is defending well but Douglas drives through and ends up in Edwards's guard.
Douglas postures up and lands a big shot to Edwards's brow.

Edwards throws his legs up looking for a submission but Douglas uses it to pass to side control.
Douglas happy to just control the position for now.
Edwards tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Douglas wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Douglas tries to move into full mount but can't pass Edwards's legs.

Douglas wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Edwards, who protects the arm well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Edwards tries to strike but it doesn't land.

Douglas tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Douglas has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Douglas trying to control the action but Edwards is working from the bottom.
Edwards is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Edwards manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Edwards wants to get back to full guard.
Edwards is refusing to be controlled, as Douglas sits in half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Edwards tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Douglas has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Edwards is squirming around, avoiding Douglas's attempts to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Douglas closes the distance and pushes Edwards back into the cage.

Douglas manages to break the clinch.
Douglas has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Edwards dives in for a single leg takedown but Douglas sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Edwards is trying hard to land a takedown here. Douglas sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Edwards misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Douglas feints and as Edwards raises his hands in defense, Douglas changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Douglas lands a couple of elbows.

Douglas tries to free his leg and advance position but Edwards is retaining full guard.

Douglas is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Edwards looking to control.
Douglas is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Douglas throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Edwards counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Douglas pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Douglas avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Douglas swats away the attempt to clinch by Edwards.
Edwards tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Douglas paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Douglas swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Edwards closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Edwards swings around for an armbar but Douglas sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Edwards's guard.
Edwards is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Edwards is working an open guard so Douglas takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Edwards fails with a takedown attempt.
Edwards shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Douglas looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Edwards!
Douglas content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Douglas feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Edwards is posturing up here but Douglas has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Edwards tries to roll out but it's too tight and Edwards has to tap! Slick submission there by Douglas!
