PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Steve Staunton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rockmeteller Todd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rockmeteller Todd told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steve Staunton!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rockmeteller Todd!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, John Kavanagh and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Staunton on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Todd. Todd obviously looking to wear him down.
Todd changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Staunton slips under a jab.
Staunton dives in and grabs Todd's left leg, looking for a takedown. Todd pushes down on Staunton's head and hops out.
A lazy left from Todd finds it's target.


It looks like Steve Staunton has been cut.
Staunton fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Staunton looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Todd is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Staunton with a body shot.
Staunton shoots in for a double leg but Todd sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Staunton. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Staunton throws a body punch but Todd moves out of range.
Todd fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Staunton checks it well.
Staunton shoots in for a takedown but Todd shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Staunton dives in for a single leg takedown but Todd sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Staunton shoots and misses
and Todd makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Staunton takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Staunton throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Todd's waist but Todd gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Staunton off to one side.
Todd lands a two punch combo.

Todd has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far.
Staunton shoots in looking for a takedown. Todd tries to sprawl out of it but Staunton keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Todd manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Staunton is breathing heavily.

Todd shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
A swing and a miss from Todd.
Staunton missing with a left hand there. Todd was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Staunton fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Todd to the ground. Staunton is now in Todd's guard.

Staunton has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Staunton trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Staunton throws a strike but Todd rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Todd slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Staunton wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Staunton controls Todd momentarily but Todd frees himself.
Staunton looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Todd puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Todd is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Todd prevents Staunton from standing back up.
Staunton tries to roll over but Todd keeps him under control.
Staunton preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Staunton is looking to control Todd's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Staunton avoid being mounted?
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Staunton controlling the position well.
Staunton is trying to maintain the position but Todd is very close to passing his half guard.
Staunton is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Todd lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Staunton has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Staunton and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Todd connects with a body shot that sends Staunton's belly button to the back.
Staunton shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Todd defends it nicely.
Rockmeteller Todd is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Todd listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Todd fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Staunton misses with a takedown attempt
and Todd counters with a good low kick that Staunton was not able to check.
Steve Staunton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Todd looks to throw the jab but Staunton is out of range.
Staunton fails with a takedown attempt.
Staunton misses with a two punch combination.
A decent looking cross lands there for Todd.
Todd throws a jab but it's blocked by Staunton.
Todd leaves Staunton with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Staunton throws a lazy uppercut
and Todd counters with a body kick.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Todd misses with a straight left.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rockmeteller Todd dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Steve Staunton's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Todd connects with a jab.
Staunton connects with a right hand. Todd shakes it off.
Staunton gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Todd cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.


Staunton is rocked!
Staunton walks straight into a right hand from Todd - that's dropped him! Todd jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Staunton from any more punishment! Staunton complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:18 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Rockmeteller Todd! Rockmeteller Todd retains his middleweight title!
A very excited looking Rockmeteller Todd made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
