PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Shinsuke Honda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dany Agua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shinsuke Honda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Dany Agua!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Ren Mimura and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Honda tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Agua is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Agua shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Honda is trying to defend but Agua finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Honda pushes Agua off looking to stand but Agua dives back in and keeps control.

Agua is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Agua wants to work for an arm triangle but Honda is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Agua is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Honda is just riding it out for now. Agua eventually gives up the hold.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Honda is trying to stand back up but Agua is controlling him

Honda is looking to control Agua's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Honda avoid being mounted?

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Agua is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Honda works his way to full guard. Good work.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Agua is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Honda is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Honda is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
You can see the frustration on Honda's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Agua wants to take a breather but Honda manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Agua.

Agua has gone for a leg lock! Honda slips out almost immediately though and dives into Agua's guard.

Agua looks to score with a jab to the body but Honda is just out of range.

Agua shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Agua was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Agua tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Agua thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Agua is looking to take a break and control but Honda is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Agua is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Honda has managed to free his arm - good work.

Agua is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Honda doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Agua.
Agua is breathing heavily.
Honda has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Agua is working away from the top position though.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Agua wants to stand but Honda has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Honda striking off his back but it's not causing Agua any problems.
Agua must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Agua sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Honda's guard.
Honda is trying to maintain the position but Agua is very close to passing his half guard.

Agua is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Honda is not content to let Agua control the position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Honda throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Agua's waist but Agua gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Honda off to one side.
Agua fails in his attempt to clinch.
Agua misses with an uppercut.
Honda wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Agua misses with a looping left.
Honda changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Dany Agua showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Honda closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Agua quickly recovers to half guard.
Agua gets back to full guard.
Agua looking for a sweep. Not yet Agua, not yet.
Honda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Agua swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Honda passes Agua's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Honda lands with a punch from half guard.

Agua gets back to full guard.

Agua is looking for a triangle but Honda pushes his legs off easily.
Agua takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Agua utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Agua is on top in guard.

Agua wants to control from the top but Honda keeps moving.
Honda wants to sweep here but Agua controlling him for the moment.
Agua looking to sit in guard and control but Honda gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Honda is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Agua is adopting a defensive guard.
Honda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Agua swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Agua pulls Honda in close to prevent any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Honda trying to control the position from guard on top but Agua is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Agua wants to stand up but Honda is controlling him.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Agua pulls Honda in close to his closed guard and prevents Honda from doing any damage or advancing position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Dany Agua seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Agua shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Honda manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Honda keeping moving, preventing Agua from controlling successfully.

Honda working for a triangle but Agua defends it easily.
Agua tries to stand but Honda is controlling from the bottom.

Agua won't allow Honda to get back to his feet.

Agua postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Honda is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Agua, into his guard.

Agua is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shinsuke Honda showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Agua has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
