PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Magnus Scott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and JayDee Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Scott kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Ironfist. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Magnus Scott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, JayDee Penn!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Ryoma Takatsuka and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Penn looking to score a takedown here. Scott is defending well but Penn drives through and ends up in Scott's guard.
Penn is looking to pass into half guard but Scott pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Scott is in guard.

Scott wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.

Penn has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Scott can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Scott working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Penn escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Scott gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Scott's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Penn has his foot on Scott's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Scott works his way back into a safe position though.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penn utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Scott is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Scott accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Penn working for a triangle but Scott defends it easily.
Scott is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Scott stands and throws Penn's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Penn struggling a bit here.
Penn is looking to reverse the position.
Penn is still trying to improve position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Scott is looking to take a break and control but Penn is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Scott working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Scott will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

That was a close round but I would say that Magnus Scott will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Scott fails in his attempt to clinch.

Penn throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Scott was covering up waiting for the punch and Penn finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Penn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Scott is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Penn, into his guard.

Penn is trying to keep Scott in close.
Magnus Scott overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Scott throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Penn works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Penn looking for a sweep. Not yet Penn, not yet.
Scott has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Scott trying to control the position from guard on top but Penn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Penn looking for subs off his back but Scott has passed one foot through into half guard.

Scott is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Penn defends it well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Scott slows the pace down in half guard.
Scott frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Penn is trying to escape the mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Scott can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Penn is looking to escape.
Scott takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Penn tries to reverse the position but Scott maintains control.
Scott working the ground and pound effectively.


It looks like JayDee Penn has been cut.
Scott lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.


That has opened up JayDee Penn's cut even more.

Scott can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Penn is looking to escape.
Scott avoids the attempt from Penn to control.
Scott wants to control but instead Penn manages to regain half guard.
Scott wants to free his trapped foot but Penn is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Scott is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Penn can do to turn this around?
Scott is taking a breather. Penn says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Penn works his way to full guard. Good work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

After the fight, JayDee Penn was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
In defeat, Magnus Scott stepped up to the mic, saying 'I'll be back!'.
