PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ronnie Putnam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Schultz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Putnam's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, tap out. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schultz throws a leg kick that is checked

and Putnam counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Putnam controlling the action here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Putnam has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

It looks like Dave Schultz has been cut.
Putnam slips under a jab from Schultz.
Schultz misses with a right hand

and Putnam counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Putnam's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

We've been hearing good reports from Putnam's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Putnam content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Schultz wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Putnam is now in half guard.

Putnam seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Schultz for as long as he can get away with.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Putnam changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Schultz looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Schultz tries to buck Putnam off but Putnam is having none of it.
Schultz on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Putnam in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Putnam lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Putnam lands a big shot there that rocks Schultz but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Schultz is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

We've been informed that Schultz has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

Putnam moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Schultz tries to score with a low kick but Putnam moves his leg out of the way.

Putnam instigates a clinch.
Schultz is looking to break free of the clinch but Putnam has double underhooks.

Putnam works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Schultz looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Putnam is stalling in the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Putnam might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Putnam postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Putnam is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Putnam is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Schultz can do to turn this around?

Schultz has had enough of the clinch but Putnam keeps him there for the moment.

Schultz is fighting off a takedown attempt but Putnam is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Schultz to the mat. Schultz regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Putnam prevents Schultz from getting back to his feet.

Putnam decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Schultz, up you get!

Schultz is in a horrible position here. Putnam smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Well Putnam has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
