PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Quentin Merrill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brocks Lesnars (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Quentin Merrill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Brocks Lesnars!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Ian Loll and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Lesnars.
Merrill feinted with a counter takedown.
Lesnars throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Lesnars takes the fight into the clinch.
Lesnars is trying to pull guard but Merrill turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Lesnars drags the fight down to the ground.
Lesnars is trying to keep Merrill in close.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lesnars tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Lesnars trying to control the position here.
Merrill really is a fat lump.

Lesnars will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Merrill with a flurry of punches that miss.
Merrill has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Lesnars can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Merrill controls the pace.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Merrill accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Merrill wants to control from the top but Lesnars keeps moving.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Merrill wants to clinch.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Merrill tries to clinch but Lesnars is having none of it.
Merrill misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Lesnars wants to counter with a clinch but Merrill pushes him away.
Lesnars misses with a head kick.
Lesnars fails with the takedown.
Merrill half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Quentin Merrill has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brocks Lesnars.
Merrill is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Lesnars tries to counter by closing the distance.

Lesnars moves into the clinch.

Merrill is trying to break the clinch but Lesnars is controlling him.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Lesnars.
Lesnars has Merrill pressed against the cage, preventing Merrill from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Lesnars misses with an elbow strike.
Merrill has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Lesnars has Merrill pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Merrill manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Lesnars's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Lesnars throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Merrill looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Merrill content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Lesnars wants to control but Merrill is keeping busy.
Lesnars might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Merrill haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Merrill wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lesnars keeps working.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Lesnars can do anything to dispel that myth.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Lesnars trying to hold on to Merrill's head to control him but Merrill postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Brocks Lesnars will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Lesnars tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Merrill manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Merrill tries to counter by clinching up but Lesnars breaks away and moves out of range.

Lesnars moves into the clinch successfully.
Lesnars drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Merrill gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Lesnars fails to pull guard.

Merrill jumps into guard, dragging Lesnars to the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lesnars pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Merrill is keeping the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lesnars in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Lesnars with a nice head shot there.
Lesnars seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Merrill is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Lesnars dives into side control.
Lesnars tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
You can see the frustration on Merrill's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Lesnars trying to control the action but Merrill is working from the bottom.
Merrill pushes Lesnars away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Lesnars gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Lesnars wants to lay and pray for a moment but Merrill keeps working.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Lesnars feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Lesnars is looking to stand up but Merrill won't let him.
Lesnars must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Lesnars slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Lesnars tries to free his leg and advance position but Merrill is retaining full guard.

Lesnars slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Lesnars working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Merrill might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Lesnars wants to stand but Merrill is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Lesnars gets the takedown into side control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Merrill is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Lesnars is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Merrill tries to hold on but Lesnars postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brocks Lesnars showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Merrill's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Lesnars postures up in Merrill's guard and throws a big left but Merrill blocks it.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Lesnars. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Lesnars pushes down on Merrill's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Lesnars throws a strike but Merrill avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Brocks Lesnars has got the better of the ground game so far.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Lesnars has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lesnars works to advance to full mount. Merrill defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Lesnars lands a big shot to the head and Merrill winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
