PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jose Matheus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takeshi Tono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jose Matheus!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takeshi Tono!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matheus cracks Tono with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Matheus tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Tono manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Tono is looking for the big counter here.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Tono has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Matheus throws a right and a left that both miss.
Matheus tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Tono showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Matheus.
And Tono tries to counter it with a takedown but Matheus pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Matheus moves in looking to clinch but Tono pushes him off.
Tono drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Matheus defends it well.
Matheus swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Nice uppercut lands for Matheus. That snapped Tono's head back.
Matheus lands a two punch combo.

Tono shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Matheus napping and manages to drive through into side control!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Tono sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Matheus is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Tono has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Matheus!
Tono tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The referee warns Matheus that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Tono throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.

Tono with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Tono lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Matheus hang on?
A nice elbow there by Tono.
Tono raining down shots from the mount!
Tono controlling the pace for now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Tono scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Tono with a couple of short strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tono swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Matheus is now in Tono's guard. A big mistake from Tono there, giving up the dominant position!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Tono wants to sweep here but Matheus controlling him for the moment.
Matheus knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Tono on the ground.
Matheus trying to stand up but can't free himself from Tono's guard.
Tono is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Tono has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tono lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Tono thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Nice strikes from Tono there.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Tono lands a nice short elbow.
Tono sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Matheus defending well though.
Matheus is breathing heavily.

Tono is looking for a kimura here.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Matheus is refusing to be controlled, as Tono sits in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Tono is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Tono works his way into full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tono landing strikes, looking to finish!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Takeshi Tono dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Tono fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Matheus to the ground. Tono is now in Matheus's guard.
Tono postures up in Matheus's guard and throws a big left but Matheus blocks it.
Tono is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Tono passes easily into side control. Nice work.
The ground and pound from Tono seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Tono advances to mount.
Tono lands a nice shot to the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tono is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Tono!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Takeshi Tono!
Takeshi Tono very nearly forgot to thank Big Bear Nutrition 160Q amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name. Hopefully he'll get a few nice freebies in the mail as a thank you.
