Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Atoya (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Calvin Ulrich (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Atoya!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Calvin Ulrich!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ulrich misses with a takedown attempt - Atoya sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Atoya stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Atoya wants it to stay on the feet.
As Ulrich tries to get set, Atoya tries to push him back and clinch up but Ulrich manages to avoid the attempt.
Ulrich shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
John Atoya has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Calvin Ulrich.
Ulrich closes this distance looking for a takedown but Atoya circles away.
Ulrich shoots for a double leg takedown but Atoya sprawls well. He's pushed Ulrich's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
As Ulrich tries to get set, Atoya tries to push him back and clinch up but Ulrich manages to avoid the attempt.
Ulrich shoots in for a takedown but Atoya shows good takedown defense.
Calvin Ulrich seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Atoya fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Ulrich, pushing him back against the cage.
Ulrich is working for takedown but Atoya is calmly controlling the position for now.
Ulrich goes for a takedown in the clinch but Atoya prevents it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ulrich fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Atoya lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Atoya landing knees to the head.


It looks like Calvin Ulrich has been cut.
Ulrich looks winded!
Ulrich letting Atoya take a breather here.
Atoya gets through Ulrich's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

Atoya decides to pull guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Atoya seems keen to control Ulrich's posture.
Atoya knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ulrich on the ground.
Atoya manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ulrich manages to get himself to full guard.

Ulrich wants to stand up but Atoya is controlling him.
Ulrich has a closed guard, preventing Atoya from standing up.
Atoya is working Ulrich over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Atoya prevents Ulrich from getting back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Atoya lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Atoya won't allow Ulrich to get back to his feet.
Atoya lands a couple of digs.
Atoya scoring with some ground and pound.
Atoya working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Ulrich's head.
Ulrich keeping moving, preventing Atoya from controlling successfully.
Atoya pushing down on Ulrich's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Ulrich tries to kick Atoya off but Atoya keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Atoya wants to stand but Ulrich has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
We've been hearing that Atoya has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Atoya is nestled in close to Ulrich, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Atoya moves nicely into side control.
Ulrich tries to escape but Atoya is in control.
Atoya working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ulrich on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Atoya lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.


Ulrich is rocked!
Atoya lands a strong strike to the head of Ulrich. That's dazed him! Atoya looking to finish here. Ulrich is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Atoya lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:27 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Atoya!
In defeat, Calvin Ulrich stepped up to the mic, saying 'I'm retiring'.
