PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Monte Melkonian (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tired and clearly flustered, he entered the arena late and after a little discussion it was decided that the bout should take place.
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Smith and Monte Melkonian. Melkonian has chosen Artsakh Music as his entrance music. Monte Melkonian will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jacob Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Monte Melkonian!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Melkonian dives in for a single leg takedown but Smith sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Nice sprawl there from Smith as Melkonian shoots in.
Smith throws a big counter combination but Melkonian scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Melkonian.
Smith looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Jacob Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Monte Melkonian.
Smith closes this distance looking for a takedown but Melkonian circles away.

Melkonian looks for a takedown but Smith sprawls well.
Melkonian throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch.
Smith has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Melkonian avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Smith is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Melkonian can't fight it off and eventually Smith manages to take the fight to the floor. Melkonian looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Smith is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Melkonian controls Smith momentarily but Smith frees himself.

Smith controls from within his opponent's guard.
Smith postures up in Melkonian's guard and throws a big left but Melkonian blocks it.
Smith connects with a couple of short punches.
Smith slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Melkonian wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Melkonian avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Melkonian closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Smith's guard.
Smith pulls Melkonian in close to his closed guard and prevents Melkonian from doing any damage or advancing position.
Smith tries to strike from the bottom.
Melkonian trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Smith trying to keep a closed guard but Melkonian is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Melkonian trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Smith instigates a clinch.
Melkonian stops a takedown attempt from Smith.

Smith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Melkonian avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Melkonian escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Smith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Smith postures up and lands a big shot to Melkonian's brow.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Smith stays in close to Melkonian's body and controls the position.
Melkonian wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Smith manages to pass to side control.
Melkonian really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Smith is taking a breather. Melkonian says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Smith gets caught napping as Melkonian dives in and scores a takedown. Smith manages to retain guard.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith stops Melkonian from getting back to his feet.
Well, if Smith is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Smith is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Melkonian has managed to free his arm - good work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Melkonian tries to kick Smith off but Smith keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Smith slips a nice elbow through Melkonian's hands, connecting with Melkonian's forehead.
Melkonian is looking for a sweep. Smith is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Smith seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Melkonian is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Jacob Smith!
