PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Brett Iowa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Walter Melon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Brett Iowa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Walter Melon!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Peter Branson and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Iowa misses with a jab, cross combination.
Iowa dives in for a single leg takedown but Melon sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Iowa darts in trying to clinch
and Melon counters with a series of strikes. Iowa will be more careful next time no doubt.
Melon throws a low kick, looking for Iowa's leg but Iowa calmly moves out of range.
Iowa shoots for a double leg takedown but Melon sprawls well. He's pushed Iowa's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Melon throws a right and a left that Iowa avoids nicely.
Brett Iowa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Iowa takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Melon moves out of range of the body kick from Iowa.
Iowa throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.

Iowa tries a head kick but it misses.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Iowa is defended easily by Melon.
Melon is looking for the big counter here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brett Iowa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Iowa is breathing heavily.
Melon lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Melon keeps the fight on the outside.
Iowa tries for a takedown but Melon circles away easily

and Melon counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Melon jumps guard but Iowa stands there with Melon around his waist. Melon gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Iowa lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Iowa jumps guard but Melon turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Iowa can't get the takedown.
Melon throws a knee to the head but misses.
Melon has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Melon prevents the takedown attempt.
Iowa has Melon pressed against the cage, preventing Melon from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Melon is trying to pull guard but Iowa turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Iowa pulls guard successfully.
Melon is in close to Iowa's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Iowa utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Melon wants to stand but Iowa is controlling his posture from full guard.
Melon looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Iowa stuck in half guard on the bottom here.
Iowa's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Melon is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Iowa will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Iowa tries to improve position but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Walter Melon dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Melon throws a one two combo.

Iowa feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Iowa stands up and waves to Melon to follow him.
Iowa swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Iowa looks to land a combination but Melon avoids it well.
Iowa scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Walter Melon seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Iowa moves into the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Iowa jumps guard and drags Melon to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Melon is looking to stand up but Iowa won't let him.

Melon wants to stand and escape but instead Iowa has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Iowa slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Iowa decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Iowa throws a sloppy head kick and Melon moves out of range easily.
Iowa stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Melon.

Melon avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Melon is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Iowa swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Iowa shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Melon trying to control from the bottom.
Iowa is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Iowa seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Melon for as long as he can get away with.

Melon is refusing to be controlled, as Iowa sits in half guard.
Iowa tries to stand and escape but Melon is controlling the position.
Melon is staying active underneath Iowa, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Melon wants to control but Iowa is keeping busy.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Iowa dives in and grabs Melon's left leg, looking for a takedown. Melon pushes down on Iowa's head and hops out.
Melon shoots in for a takedown but Iowa shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
No joy there for Iowa, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Melon misses with a takedown attempt - Iowa sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Iowa fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Melon, pushing him back against the cage.

Iowa pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Iowa has managed to clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brett Iowa dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Iowa blocks a head kick by Melon.

Iowa clinches up with Melon and pushes him back against the cage.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Melon is fighting off a takedown attempt but Iowa is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Melon to the mat. Melon regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Iowa continues to stall.

Melon seems keen to control Iowa's posture.
Iowa works a leg free and moves into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Iowa is looking to advance position but Melon won't allow it.
Melon holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Iowa throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Iowa shoots in and gets a takedown into Melon's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Iowa is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Melon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Brett Iowa overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Melon wants to sweep but no luck.
Iowa controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Iowa has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Iowa clinches with his opponent.

Iowa breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Melon fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Iowa avoids it really well and circles away.
