PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Donnell Jenkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Steinberg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Donnell Jenkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rick Steinberg!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Jeff Smith and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steinberg lands a jab to Jenkins's midsection.
Jenkins changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Steinberg tries to avoid it but Jenkins manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Steinberg to the ground. Steinberg escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Jenkins tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Steinberg smiles and moves away.
Steinberg misses with a takedown attempt - Jenkins sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Steinberg drives through and clinches with Jenkins against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Steinberg has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Jenkins uses from the top position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jenkins accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Jenkins postures up in Steinberg's guard and throws a big left but Steinberg blocks it.

Jenkins wants to control from the top but Steinberg keeps moving.
Jenkins might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Jenkins has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Steinberg is proving hard to escape from.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jenkins could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Jenkins appears to be looking for a big counter.

Steinberg drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Jenkins tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Steinberg wants to stand but Jenkins has his arm trapped.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jenkins is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Jenkins tries to kick Steinberg off but Steinberg keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The fighters are battling for position here. Jenkins manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Jenkins is really struggling to control Steinberg but he's trying to hold on to the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Steinberg tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Jenkins can't do much from the bottom here.
Steinberg wants to control but Jenkins is keeping him busy.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Jenkins seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Steinberg swings away with a body shot that misses
and Jenkins counters with a left and a right that stings Steinberg.

Jenkins closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Steinberg is breathing heavily.
Steinberg is looking for a sweep.
Steinberg gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Jenkins wants to work for an arm triangle but Steinberg is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Jenkins wants to get back to his feet.

Jenkins stands up out of the half guard.
Steinberg fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Steinberg swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Jenkins counters with a good low kick that Steinberg was not able to check.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Steinberg manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Jenkins on his heels. He'll look to pass Jenkins's guard now, I'm sure.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jenkins has his hands on Steinberg's head, controlling the position.
Jenkins bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Steinberg's guard.

Steinberg shoots in for a takedown but Jenkins shows good takedown defense.
Jenkins appears to be looking for a big counter.
Steinberg looks to land a combination but Jenkins avoids it well.
Jenkins thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Steinberg if he has to take too many more of those.
Jenkins takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Steinberg bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Steinberg is thwarting Jenkins's attempts to control the position.

Some bone on bone action there as Jenkins checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Steinberg scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Steinberg will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Jenkins appears to be looking for a big counter.
Steinberg goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Jenkins closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jenkins lands in his opponent's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Jenkins trying to control the position from guard on top but Steinberg is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rick Steinberg comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Steinberg has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
