PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Leroy Townsend (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sergei Kovalev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Leroy Townsend!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sergei Kovalev!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kovalev connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Townsend's hands.


It looks like Leroy Townsend has been cut.
Townsend throws a lazy right hand but Kovalev sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Kovalev looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Townsend might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kovalev is controlling the pace.
Kovalev seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kovalev is keen to just control but Townsend is a slippery customer.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Kovalev seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Kovalev has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Townsend is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Townsend is looking for the choke from the back position but Kovalev is controlling his hands well.

Kovalev tries to lock up and control but Townsend gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Townsend is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Kovalev has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Kovalev somehow manages to escape the mount and get back to his feet!

Kovalev is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Townsend has managed to free his arm - good work.
Townsend is not content to let Kovalev control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kovalev is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Townsend doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Kovalev.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sergei Kovalev showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Kovalev has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Townsend has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Kovalev closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Kovalev takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Kovalev is looking for a kimura but Townsend is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kovalev to get the leverage.
Kovalev has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Townsend avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Kovalev closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Townsend to the mat! Townsend manages to get full guard.
Kovalev looking to sit in guard and control but Townsend gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Townsend rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kovalev moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

As Kovalev looks to move away, Townsend throws a big counter combo bu Kovalev just gets out of the way.
Kovalev lands with a nice combination. Townsend backs away looking to recover.

Townsend wants to clinch up but Kovalev keeps it at a distance.
Sergei Kovalev seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Townsend shoots in and drives through. Kovalev sprawls well.

Kovalev closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Townsend's guard.

Sergei Kovalev is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Well Kovalev has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
