PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Diego English (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ashin Sukumaran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Diego English!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Ashin Sukumaran!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, James Glass and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sukumaran feints and as English raises his hands in defense, Sukumaran changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sukumaran looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Sukumaran prevents English from getting back to his feet.
Sukumaran postures up.
Sukumaran postures up in English's guard and throws a big left but English blocks it.
Sukumaran trying to control but English is working from the bottom.
English wants to sweep but no luck.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sukumaran tries to free his leg and advance position but English is retaining full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Sukumaran has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Sukumaran drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

English is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Sukumaran is looking to take a break and control but English is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

English pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Sukumaran gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Sukumaran is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
English wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Sukumaran has him pressed against the cage.

English manages to break the clinch.
A looping hook to the body misses from English. Sukumaran does a little dance to reset his feet.
Sukumaran tries to land a front kick but English steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
As Sukumaran looks to move away, English throws a big counter combo bu Sukumaran just gets out of the way.
English tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sukumaran swivels and escapes.

Diego English has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ashin Sukumaran.
English throws the kick towards the body but Sukumaran avoids it.

English throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sukumaran tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. English is in Sukumaran's guard.
English has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Sukumaran throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
English has had enough of the clinch but Sukumaran keeps him there for the moment.
English really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

English jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Sukumaran walks away with a smile on his face. English gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sukumaran might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control English haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
