PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mike Ross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nicodemo Romero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ross comes to the cage accompanied by Neck of the Woods. Romero has chosen Lords Of Salem as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 10 - 1, fighting out of New York, Mike Ross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Nicodemo Romero!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Donald Grub and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Romero throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Ross ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Romero moves away.

Ross stuns Romero with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Romero throws a nice looking combination but Ross bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Romero changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Ross tries to avoid it but Romero manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Ross to the ground. Ross escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ross does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Ross lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Ross throws a head kick but Romero moves out of range.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mike Ross has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nicodemo Romero.
Ross will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Some bone on bone action there as Romero checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Romero looks to land a combination. Ross sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

No joy there for Romero, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Ross, as that shot connected.

Romero throws a hook to the side of Ross's head but Ross sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Ross goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

Romero goes for a double leg but Ross avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Ross continues to drive forward.

Ross throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Romero lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Ross throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Romero shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ross as he jumps to the side.
Ross throws an overhand right that lands on Romero's shoulder, as Romero tries to avoid the shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mike Ross will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Romero is pushing down on Ross's leg trying to pass to half guard. Ross is fighting to maintain full guard but Romero has managed to sneak the leg through.

My spies in Montreal Fighter's Gym (4.5* Sparring) inform me that Romero has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Ross has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Romero has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Ross is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Ross gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Ross gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Ross apologises and we restart here on the feet.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Ross bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Romero's guard.


Romero working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ross doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ross manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Romero is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Ross doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Romero.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ross has his hands on Romero's head, controlling the position.

Romero got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ross has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Romero has managed to get both his arms back between Ross's legs - danger averted.

Mike Ross overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mike Ross.
Well Ross has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
