PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Nick Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brad Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nick Evans!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brad Shaw!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Eddie Farnsworth and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Evans throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.
Evans pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A low kick from Shaw is predictable there
and Evans counters with an inside leg kick.
Shaw avoids the head kick by Evans.
Evans throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Shaw throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Shaw shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Evans as he jumps to the side.
We've been told by Evans's head coaches at BigMouth Cabrons that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Shaw tries to score a power double leg takedown but Evans sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Shaw somewhat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Evans goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Evans is looking to land body kicks.

Evans lands with a slapping head kick.
Evans takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Evans connects with a body shot that sends Shaw's belly button to the back.
Evans misses with an attempted mid kick.
Evans takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Shaw throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Evans sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Evans seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Shaw takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Evans fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Shaw takes a swing at Evans's ribcage but misses.
Shaw shoots for a takedown but Evans saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Nick Evans has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brad Shaw.
No luck for Shaw with that takedown attempt.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Shaw misses with an attempted mid kick.
Evans lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Shaw closes this distance looking for a takedown but Evans circles away.
Evans throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Evans scores with a nice body kick.
Brad Shaw seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shaw misses with a jab to the body
and Evans counters with an inside leg kick.
Shaw throws out a leg kick but Evans moves out of range and Shaw only half commits.
Shaw avoids the body shot from Evans.
Shaw shoots in and drives through. Evans sprawls well.
Evans throws a sloppy head kick and Shaw moves out of range easily.

and Shaw counters with a shoot takedown. Evans fights it but they end up in guard.
Evans wants to sweep but no luck.

Evans is adopting a defensive guard.
Shaw trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Shaw trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Shaw throws a sloppy body shot
and Evans counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Evans keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
An inside leg kick from Evans misses.
Evans leaves Shaw with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Shaw crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Evans - the referee stops the clock and Shaw gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Evans. Shaw manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Shaw uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Evans.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Evans pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Evans stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Evans wants it to stay on the feet.
Shaw tries to score a power double leg takedown but Evans sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Shaw somewhat.
The fighters circling - Shaw throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Shaw blocks a head kick by Evans.
Evans tries a head kick but it misses.
Shaw throws a counter combo.

Evans is looking to wear down Shaw with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Shaw throws a low kick, looking for Evans's leg but Evans calmly moves out of range.

and Shaw decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Evans's guard.
Evans is pulling down on Shaw's head to control his posture.
Evans is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Evans has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Shaw has passed into side control.

Evans is looking to reverse the position.
Evans can't do much from the bottom here.

Shaw is trying to get an arm triangle but Evans is defending well.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Evans prevents Shaw from moving into mount.
Shaw working the ground and pound but Evans is defending the strikes.
Evans stops Shaw from passing to mount.
Shaw in side control, throwing shots but Evans defends.

Shaw controls the position from side control.
Evans tries to buck Shaw off but Shaw is having none of it.
Evans is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Shaw trying to control the action but Evans is working from the bottom.
Evans has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shaw is working away from the top position though.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Shaw throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Evans stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Evans throws a leg kick that misses.
Evans lands a nice leg kick that just misses Shaw's sensitive parts.
Evans ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Shaw moves away.
Evans pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A nice leg kick lands there from Evans.
Some wild striking there from Evans.
Shaw tries to counter with a clinch but Evans shakes him off and moves away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Evans takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Evans throws a wild body kick that Shaw sees coming a mile off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Nick Evans will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Evans looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Shaw looks to score with a jab to the body but Evans is just out of range.
Brad Shaw is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Evans throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Shaw swings for the body but Evans moves out of range.

Evans explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Evans. Shaw shrugs it off though.

and Shaw counters with a single leg into guard. Evans didn't expect that.
Evans controls Shaw momentarily but Shaw frees himself.
Shaw sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Evans's guard.
Shaw wants to lay and pray for a moment but Evans keeps working.
Evans is trying to get back to full guard.
Brad Shaw has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Nick Evans is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Evans keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Evans has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shaw is working away from the top position though.
Shaw passes to full mount!

Shaw has control of Evans's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Evans regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Shaw thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Brad Shaw has got the better of the ground game so far.
Evans is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Evans is desperately trying to improve his position but Shaw has a good base and remains in mount.

Evans tries to lock up and control but Shaw gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Evans is in a horrible position here. Shaw smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

I think Evans has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
