PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Russell Palmer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Darrell Abbott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Russell Palmer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Darrell Abbott!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Jorge Garcia and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Abbott clinches up with Palmer and pushes him back against the cage.
Palmer goes for a takedown in the clinch but Abbott prevents it.
Palmer tries for a takedown. No joy.
Palmer goes for a takedown in the clinch but Abbott prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Russell Palmer. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Abbott breaks from the clinch.
A head kick misses from Abbott.
Palmer shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Abbott sprawls well. Abbott wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Palmer gets slowly back to his feet.

Abbott is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Palmer's half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Abbott is thwarting Palmer's attempts to control the position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Abbott lands with a punch from half guard.
Abbott wants to get back to his feet.
Palmer wants to control but Abbott is keeping busy.
Palmer is staying active underneath Abbott, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Abbott tries to stand but can't do so whilst Palmer controls his leg.

Abbott seems to be looking for submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Abbott is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Palmer makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Palmer.
Abbott controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Abbott trying to stand up but can't free himself from Palmer's guard.
Abbott lands a couple of elbows.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Abbott passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Abbott tries to stand but Palmer is controlling his head.

Abbott tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Abbott creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Abbott is looking to take a break and control but Palmer is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Darrell Abbott dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Palmer rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Abbott moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Abbott moves into range and clinches up with Palmer.
Palmer is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Abbott gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Abbott has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Palmer clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Abbott has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Abbott biding his time, controlling Palmer.
I really don't envy Palmer right now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Palmer defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Abbott's arms.
Abbott just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

Abbott is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Palmer. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Abbott is hanging on to Palmer's back as he tries to escape.
Abbott lands with a hammerfist to the side of Palmer's head.
Palmer rolls, trying to escape but Abbott keeps control of the position.
Abbott wants to control but Palmer is keeping busy.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Palmer could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Palmer trying to control the hands but Abbott won't let him.
Abbott lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Palmer hold on?!

Palmer tries to escape but Abbott has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Palmer is working hard here to advance position.
Abbott trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Palmer doesn't escape.
Palmer can't escape the position.
Abbott doesn't have the hooks in and Palmer manages to turn into his guard.
Abbott seems keen to control Palmer's posture.
Abbott is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Abbott wants to pass the guard but Palmer is defending well.
Abbott prevents Palmer from improving his position.
Abbott is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Palmer wants to get back to full guard.

Abbott is trying to work for a kimura but Palmer is defending well.
Abbott content to control rather than advance.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Palmer is trying to control but can't.
Abbott wants to take a breather but Palmer is having none of it.

Palmer actively working from the bottom here.
Abbott winds up and cracks Palmer with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Abbott trying to control from half guard but Palmer is working away.
Abbott is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Abbott tries to stand but can't do so whilst Palmer controls his leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Darrell Abbott showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!



Abbott fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Palmer sprawls well initially but Abbott persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Abbott looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Palmer is pressing down on Abbott's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Abbott trying to control but Palmer is working from the bottom.

Palmer looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Abbott passes into side control.

Palmer is rocked!
Palmer on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Oh Palmer is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Abbott thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Abbott creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Abbott slows the pace down.
Abbott lands a strong strike to the head of Palmer. That's dazed him! Abbott looking to finish here. Palmer is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Abbott lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:45 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Darrell Abbott!
