The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pena fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Brooks sprawls well initially but Pena persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Brooks is looking to improve his position.
Brooks keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Pena is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Brooks has managed to free his arm - good work.
Brooks has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pena is working away from the top position though.
Brooks really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pena. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Brooks throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Nice takedown defense from Brooks. No joy for Pena on that attempt.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Pena takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Brooks rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Pena moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Pena shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Brooks as he avoids it easily.

A head kick by Pena misses
and Brooks counters with a series of strikes. Pena will be more careful next time no doubt.
Brooks dives in and grabs Pena's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pena pushes down on Brooks's head and hops out.
Pena shoots in looking for a takedown but Brooks manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Pena's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

and Brooks counters with a three punch combo that has Pena backing up. Pena nods at Brooks to acknowledge the strikes.

Girth Brooks showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Pena shoots in looking for a takedown. Brooks tries to sprawl out of it but Pena keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Brooks manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pena tries to score a power double leg takedown but Brooks sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Pena somewhat.
