PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Snake Shadow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nicodemo Romero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shadow comes to the cage accompanied by Snake in the Eagles Shadow. Romero has chosen Lords Of Salem as his entrance music. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Snake Shadow!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Nicodemo Romero!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Daniel Bishop and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Romero moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Shadow definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
A jab from Shadow does it's job there.
Romero scores with a nice head shot.
Shadow circles away from the clinch attempt

and Shadow counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Romero controls Shadow momentarily but Shadow frees himself.
Shadow trying to control but Romero is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shadow postures up.
Shadow wants to control from the top but Romero keeps moving.
Romero pulls Shadow in close to prevent any damage.
Shadow trying to control the position from guard on top but Romero is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shadow is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Nicodemo Romero seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shadow closes the distance and clinches up with Romero, looking for a takedown. Shadow pushes Romero against the cage but Romero circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Romero throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Romero fails in his attempt to clinch.
Shadow cracks Romero with an open hand slap.
Shadow slips under a jab.
Shadow feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Shadow scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Shadow slips under a jab from Romero.

Romero rushes Shadow and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Romero struggles to land a body shot inside as Shadow controls his hands.
Romero tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Shadow avoids it.
Shadow blocks a body shot from Romero.
Shadow stalling in the clinch but Romero improves position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Romero lands an elbow inside.
Shadow lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shadow gets control of Romero's arms and successfully pulls guard. Shadow will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Shadow not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Romero tries to free his leg and advance position but Shadow is retaining full guard.

Shadow looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Romero drops back, looking for a kneebar! Shadow looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Shadow looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Shadow!

Shadow is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Romero knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Romero trying to remain calm as Shadow controls from the top position.

Romero gets back to half guard.

Shadow wants to work for an arm triangle but Romero is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Shadow thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Romero's head.
Romero wants to get back to full guard.
Shadow is just content to waste time from the top position. Romero takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Romero is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Romero keeping moving, preventing Shadow from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Romero has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Shadow can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Romero is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Shadow is looking to control Romero's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Shadow avoid being mounted?

Romero seems to be working for a kimura but Shadow defends the submission attempt.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Snake Shadow dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Romero throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Shadow sees it coming and avoids it easily.
A combination from Shadow does no damage.
Romero raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Romero takes a swing at Shadow's ribcage but misses.
Jab, jab by Shadow - just one landing.
Shadow throws a leg kick but Romero moved away.
Romero tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shadow paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shadow slips under a jab.
A little feinted left hand from Shadow on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Romero throws a right hand that Shadow ducks under and follows up with a left that Shadow also avoids with ease.
A counter left hand to the body from Shadow misses its target.

Shadow manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Romero on his heels. He'll look to pass Romero's guard now, I'm sure.

Shadow postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Romero is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Shadow, into his guard.

My spies in Montreal Fighter's Gym (4.5* Sparring) inform me that Romero has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Romero swings around for an armbar but Shadow sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Romero's guard.

Shadow wants to control from the top but Romero keeps moving.
Shadow won't allow Romero to sweep him here.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shadow passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Romero sneaks back into half guard.

Romero is defending against the submission attempts here by Shadow.

Romero wants to get back to full guard.
Shadow passes the guard and advances to mount!
Shadow prevents Romero from getting the reversal.
Shadow with shots to the head and body - Romero looks very uncomfortable down there.
Shadow scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Romero tries to reverse the position but Shadow maintains control.

Romero tries to hold on but Shadow pushes him away.
Shadow postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Romero looks a forlorn figure.
Shadow lands a big elbow.


It looks like Nicodemo Romero has been cut.
Shadow takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Romero is trying desperately to improve position.
Shadow is in the full mount, landing strikes.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Shadow goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Romero is on top in guard.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Shadow closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Romero quickly recovers to half guard.
Shadow scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Romero is looking to improve his position.
Shadow uses his free foot to push down on Romero's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Romero.
Snake Shadow overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Shadow looking to control and managing it successfully.
Shadow looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That has opened up Nicodemo Romero's cut even more.

Shadow is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Romero to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Romero shrugs it off.
Romero is looking to improve his position but Shadow isn't that keen on the idea.

Shadow is in the full mount, landing strikes.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Shadow cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!


The cut above Nicodemo Romero's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
Romero is wriggling around trying to escape.
Shadow looking to control but Romero is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Shadow breaks from Romero's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Shadow landing strikes, looking to finish!


Nicodemo Romero's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Nicodemo Romero's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Snake Shadow!
As Snake Shadow got his breath back, he grabbed the microphone and managed to blurt out the following: I will retire you- Romero'.
