PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Birk Smygare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Mac (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Mac's choice of entrance music: I Gatta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Birk Smygare!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Jay Mac!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Chris Edwards and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smygare feints and then cracks Mac's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mac down.

Mac closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Smygare to the mat! Smygare manages to get full guard.
Mac pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smygare is keeping the position for now.
Mac trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Smygare manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!
Smygare knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mac on the ground.

Mac throws his legs up looking for a submission but Smygare uses it to pass to side control.

Smygare stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Smygare clinches up with Mac and pushes him back against the cage.

Smygare decides to pull guard.
Smygare wants to stand but Mac is controlling the position.
Smygare pulls Mac in close to his closed guard and prevents Mac from doing any damage or advancing position.

Smygare keeping full guard, as Mac tries to pass.
Mac is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Smygare throws his legs up looking for a submission but Mac uses it to pass to side control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Mac wants to control for a moment but Smygare uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

Smygare has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Smygare seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Mac for as long as he can get away with.

Smygare seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mac does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Birk Smygare just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Smygare rushes Mac and presses him up against the cage.
Mac has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Smygare is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Mac working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smygare doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smygare manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Smygare in particular looking to stall.

Mac is trying to get back to full guard.
Mac is breathing heavily.
Mac is pressing down on Smygare's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Birk Smygare just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Smygare pushes Mac up against the cage in a clinch.

Smygare wants the takedown. Mac is fighting it off but Smygare persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mac's guard against the cage.

Mac wants to hit a switch here but Smygare passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Mac there!

Smygare manages to capitalize on a mistake by Mac to take his back!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smygare really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Mac.
Mac is trying to break free.
Mac is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Birk Smygare overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Smygare tries to close the distance and clinch but Mac swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Smygare lets loose with a powerful body kick. Mac will feel that in the morning.
Smygare tries to clinch but Mac moves out of range.
Smygare buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Smygare fails in his attempt to clinch.
Smygare fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Mac takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Smygare throws a leg kick which misses Mac's front leg but catches the back leg as Mac tries to avoid it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smygare explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Smygare closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Smygare not doing much here.

Smygare decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Smygare shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Smygare controlling the pace for now.
Smygare's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mac is trying to get back to full guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Smygare feints and as Mac raises his hands in defense, Smygare changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Well Smygare has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
