PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Doug White (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ivan Drago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Doug White!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ivan Drago!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Arvi Lind and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
White is looking to clinch.
White tries to clinch there but Drago circles away.
Drago with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
White tries to clinch but Drago is having none of it.
White changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Drago tries to avoid it but White manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Drago to the ground. Drago escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
White moves in looking to clinch but Drago pushes him off.
White looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

White drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
White knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Drago on the ground.
White wants to pass the guard but Drago is keeping the position.
Drago looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
White wants to control from the top but Drago keeps moving.

Drago throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Drago pushes White off and scrambles back to his feet.

Drago gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Drago scores a nice knee to the body.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Drago is trying to work for a single leg takedown but White pulls him back up using the underhooks.
White lands an uppercut.
White is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Drago has White pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. White manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Drago crunches a lovely knee into White's ribcage.
Drago content to slow the pace in the clinch.
White jumps guard but Drago stands there with White around his waist. White gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Doug White. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Drago unloads a knee to the mid-section. White lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Drago stalling the fight.
White throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Drago prevents a takedown attempt there.

Drago escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
White clinches but Drago breaks the clinch
and Drago counters with a three punch combo that has White backing up. White nods at Drago to acknowledge the strikes.
Drago looks gassed!
White throws a sloppy head kick

and Drago counters by clinching up.
White misses with the head strike.

Drago gets control of White's arms and successfully pulls guard. Drago will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
White won't allow Drago to get back to his feet.
White looking to pass the guard.
Drago keeping moving, preventing White from controlling successfully.
Drago trying to keep a closed guard but White is proving a slippery customer.

White stopping the sweep attempt from Drago.
Drago is trying to keep White in close.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
White will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Drago shoots in but no luck this time.
White clinches but Drago breaks the clinch
and Drago counters with an outside leg kick.
White tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

White feints and as Drago raises his hands in defense, White changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
White trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

White loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
White looking to pass the guard.

Drago has his foot on White's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. White works his way back into a safe position though.

White drops back, looking for a kneebar! Drago looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Drago looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Drago!

Drago wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by White, who protects the arm well.
Drago is looking to take a break and control but White is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ivan Drago dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



White darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
White is thwarting Drago's attempts to control the position.
Drago wants to get back to full guard.
Drago is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Drago gets back to full guard.
Drago is breathing heavily.
White tries to free his leg and advance position but Drago is retaining full guard.

White throwing strikes from guard but Drago blocks nicely.

Drago has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but White can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
White wants to pass the guard but Drago is keeping the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
White shoots in for a takedown but Drago shows good takedown defense.
Drago throws a hook but White avoids it easily.
White shoots for a takedown but Drago saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

White closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Drago to the mat! Drago manages to get full guard.
Drago wants to sweep but no luck.

Drago throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Drago is trying to control the position but White postures up.
Drago keeping full guard, as White tries to pass.
Drago looking to hit a scissor sweep but White is one step ahead there.

White decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Drago, up you get!

enabling Drago to counter with a crisp jab.

and Drago counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Drago wants to control from the top but White keeps moving.
Drago slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
White is looking to regain half guard here but Drago keeps moving and retains side control.

Drago is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but White is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Drago stands up and beckons White to his feet.
Doug White is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

White shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Drago as he avoids it easily.
White tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
White looks for a takedown but Drago sprawls well.

Drago forces White back against the cage and clinches.
Drago wants a takedown.
Drago with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.
White is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

White goes for a takedown attempt but Drago pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Ivan Drago showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! White's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Drago throws an uppercut from half a mile away. White sees it coming and avoids it easily.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

White avoiding damage as Drago throws knees to the body.
Drago gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from White.
White has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Drago avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Drago gets a trip takedown into half guard.
White is looking for a sweep. Drago is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
White is refusing to be controlled, as Drago sits in half guard.
White tries to roll over but Drago keeps him under control.
Drago looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
White is controlling Drago's trapped leg to prevent Drago from advancing to side control.
Drago thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed White's head.
Drago is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for White!

White is working to get back to half guard.
White is squirming around, avoiding Drago's attempts to control the action.
Drago has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of White's face.

Drago working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
White avoids a strike by Drago and manages to complete a very nice reversal in the process, to end up in Drago's guard! Fantastic escape!
Drago throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Ivan Drago has got the better of the ground game so far.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
White pushing down on Drago's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Drago pushes White off looking to stand but White dives back in and keeps control.

Drago looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

White is looking for a kimura here.
Drago works his way to full guard. Good work.
White has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
White loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Drago is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ivan Drago comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Drago has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
