PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Donte Hogan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Wates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Donte Hogan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ben Wates!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Andrew Berry and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wates shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Wates not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Wates throwing shots but Hogan is blocking nicely.
Wates is keen to just control but Hogan is a slippery customer.
Hogan wants to control but Wates is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Wates trying to control from Hogan's half guard. Hogan has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Hogan avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wates won't allow Hogan to sweep him here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hogan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Wates tries to stand but Hogan is controlling from the bottom.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Wates stopping the sweep attempt from Hogan.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Wates looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Hogan!
Wates tries to move to mount but Hogan blocks the move with his legs.
Wates has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Hogan!
Wates connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Wates landing strikes from the mount and Hogan is in trouble!
Wates trying to control but Hogan is having none of it.

Wates is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Hogan is surviving well by controlling Wates's body position as best he can.

Wates swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Hogan is now in Wates's guard. A big mistake from Wates there, giving up the dominant position!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Wates utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Hogan controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Hogan gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Wates displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.


Hogan is rocked!


It looks like Donte Hogan has been cut.
Wates misses with a series of wild punches.

Wates changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hogan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Oh Hogan is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Wates throws an elbow but Hogan slips to the side and avoids it well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wates lands a decent elbow from side control.
Wates working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Wates is putting a hurting on Hogan here, landing some big shots from side control.
Hogan takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Wates wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Hogan, who protects the arm well.

Hogan tries to bench press Wates off him but Wates keeps the position.
Wates is looking to take a break and control but Hogan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Wates lands a nice forearm strike.
Wates cracks Hogan with a big right hand but Hogan just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Wates working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Wates decides to stand back up.

Wates shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hogan napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Hogan pushes Wates away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Wates gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Wates has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Hogan regains half guard, as Wates was trying to land strikes.

Hogan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Wates, pushing him back against the cage.

Wates has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Hogan is trying to keep an underhook but Wates manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Hogan seems to have got his legs back now.
Hogan slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Wates stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hogan swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wates wants to control from the top but Hogan keeps moving.
Wates might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hogan haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Hogan is trying to control the position but Wates postures up.
Wates tries to stand but Hogan is controlling from the bottom.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Wates wants to pass the guard but Hogan is keeping the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Hogan.
Wates is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Wates lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Wates moves into the clinch successfully.
Wates throws a head punch that misses.
Hogan takes a knee right on the jaw!
Wates has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hogan fails to pull guard.

Wates's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Wates gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Hogan jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Wates walks away with a smile on his face. Hogan gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Donte Hogan. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Wates shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Wates was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Wates is trying to get an arm triangle but Hogan is defending well.

Wates is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Hogan will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Hogan is trying to control Wates's posture but Wates avoids it.
Wates misses with the ground and pound.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Wates controls the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Wates looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.

Hogan gets tackled into the cage by Wates. Wates maintains the clinch.

Wates pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Wates has Hogan up against the cage in a clinch.
Wates with an attempt at a knee that misses.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wates creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Wates escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ben Wates showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Wates takes the fight into the clinch.

Wates jumps into guard, dragging Hogan to the mat.
Wates looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Hogan stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Wates looking to throw knees to the head but Hogan is blocking nicely.

Wates looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Wates breaks the clinch.
Wates tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Hogan is able to avoid easily.
Hogan seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Wates has closed the distance and engaged Hogan in a clinch.

Wates ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Wates no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Hogan gets to his feet - Wates follows without any prompting.
Wates misses with an attempted mid kick.

Hogan forces Wates back against the cage and clinches.
Wates with an attempt at a knee that misses.

Hogan pulls guard.
Wates throwing strikes but missing.

Hogan is looking to stand back up but Wates counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Hogan.
Wates is keen to just control but Hogan is a slippery customer.
Wates is taking a breather. Hogan says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Wates tries to stand and escape but Hogan is controlling the position.
Wates working the head and body with strikes.
Wates seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hogan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Wates is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hogan defends it well.
Wates takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Wates darts in and clinches Hogan up against the cage.

Wates has control of Hogan's left arm, preventing Hogan from doing any damage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Wates is working an open guard so Hogan takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Ben Wates comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wates has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
