PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rick Vasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mo Jo Sun (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Rick Vasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mo Jo Sun!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sun takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Sun looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Vasquez!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Sun misses with the ground and pound.
Sun working away.
Sun misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Vasquez can't do much from the bottom here.
Vasquez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Vasquez is letting Sun control him for a moment.
Sun is looking to take a break and control but Vasquez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Vasquez is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Sun is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Sun throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Vasquez tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sun is in Vasquez's guard.

Vasquez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sun postures up in Vasquez's guard and throws a big left but Vasquez blocks it.

Sun postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Sun missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Sun not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Sun loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Vasquez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Sun wants to control from the top but Vasquez keeps moving.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Vasquez gets caught napping as Sun dives in and scores a takedown. Vasquez manages to retain guard.

Vasquez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sun defends well.
Sun is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Sun with a flurry of punches that miss.
Vasquez controls Sun momentarily but Sun frees himself.
Vasquez is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Sun controls from within his opponent's guard.
Vasquez wants to stand and escape but Sun is having none of it.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Sun takes a body punch but keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mo Jo Sun dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Vasquez tries to sprawl but Sun drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Vasquez trying to control but Sun postures up.
Vasquez won't allow Sun to pass to mount.
Vasquez wants to control but Sun is keeping busy.
Sun not doing much here.
Sun throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Sun has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Vasquez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sun's waist but Sun gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vasquez off to one side.

Sun shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Vasquez's guard.
Vasquez is trying to keep Sun in close.
Vasquez tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Vasquez can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sun controls the pace.
Mo Jo Sun has got the better of the ground game so far.

Vasquez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Sun postures up.

Sun gets to his feet. Vasquez looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Sun has Vasquez up against the cage in a clinch.
Sun misses with a knee to the head.

Sun pulls guard.
Vasquez trying to control but Sun is working from the bottom.
Vasquez controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sun working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Sun wants to control from the top but Vasquez keeps moving.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Vasquez is pulling down on Sun's head. It's preventing any offense from Sun, at least for the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Sun feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Sun is stalling in the full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Mo Jo Sun showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Vasquez doesn't manage to clinch there - Sun circles away.
Vasquez goes for a double leg but Sun avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Sun continues to drive forward.

Sun misses with a knee to the head.

Sun jumps guard and drags Vasquez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Sun controls Vasquez momentarily but Vasquez frees himself.
Vasquez wants to stand and escape but instead Sun has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Sun distracts Vasquez with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Sun got a little sloppy there for a moment and Vasquez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sun has managed to get both his arms back between Vasquez's legs - danger averted.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Rick Vasquez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Sun holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Sun manages to pull guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Sun is on top in guard.


Sun thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Vasquez wriggles free and stands up.

Vasquez tries to pull guard but Sun holds him up against the cage and eventually Vasquez drops back down to his feet.

Sun breaks the clinch.

Sun moves into range and clinches up with Vasquez.
Sun stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Vasquez is looking to control Sun's arms but Sun gets an underhook and turns him. Now Vasquez has his back to the cage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Sun pulls guard effortlessly.
Vasquez preventing the sweep.
Vasquez wants to stand and escape but instead Sun has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Vasquez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Mo Jo Sun is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Vasquez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sun sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Sun throws a big elbow that misses.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
