PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Burl Hobbs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dean Ambrose (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Burl Hobbs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Dean Ambrose!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Daniel Bishop and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ambrose shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Hobbs defends it nicely.
Hobbs throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Ambrose's head.
Ambrose dives in for a single leg takedown but Hobbs sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Hobbs tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Ambrose looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ambrose misses with a takedown
and Hobbs counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Ambrose thinking.
Burl Hobbs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dean Ambrose.
Hobbs will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Ambrose changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hobbs looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Hobbs throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hobbs is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Hobbs throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Hobbs has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Ambrose thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Hobbs tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Ambrose looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Ambrose thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hobbs's head.
Ambrose prevents Hobbs from improving his position.
Ambrose is controlling the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Ambrose will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Ambrose misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Ambrose looks winded!
Ambrose swats away the attempt to clinch by Hobbs.
Ambrose avoids a punch combination nicely.
And Ambrose tries to counter it with a takedown but Hobbs pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Ambrose shoots in for a takedown but Hobbs shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Hobbs is looking to clinch but Ambrose is avoiding it.

Ambrose fails with the takedown.
Hobbs attempts a counter takedown but Ambrose avoids it well and moves away.
Hobbs misses with a series of wild punches.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Ambrose.

Hobbs fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Ambrose to the ground. Hobbs is now in Ambrose's guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hobbs wants to get up but he can't break Ambrose's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Burl Hobbs dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Hobbs lands a head kick. Ambrose smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Ambrose fails with an attempt to clinch.

Hobbs closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Ambrose did well to prevent Hobbs getting side control.
Hobbs thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ambrose's head.
Hobbs is trying to control. Ambrose wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Hobbs drops an elbow to the side of Ambrose's head.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Hobbs looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Ambrose gets back to full guard.

Ambrose has his foot on Hobbs's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hobbs works his way back into a safe position though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Hobbs has gone for a leg lock! Ambrose slips out almost immediately though and dives into Hobbs's guard.

Hobbs doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Hobbs has momentary wrist control but Ambrose slips an elbow through the middle.
Hobbs will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Ambrose makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Hobbs is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ambrose can do to turn this around?
Ambrose won't allow Hobbs to sweep him here.
Hobbs doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hobbs tries to counter with a takedown but Ambrose is quick to defend against it.
Ambrose changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hobbs tries to avoid it but Ambrose manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hobbs to the ground. Hobbs escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hobbs misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Hobbs slaps away a takedown attempt from Ambrose, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Burl Hobbs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dean Ambrose.
Hobbs scores with a one two! Ambrose had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Hobbs lands a high kick!
Ambrose misses with a low kick.
Hobbs takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Ambrose has a takedown stuffed.
Good leg kick by Hobbs there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Ambrose wants to clinch up but Hobbs keeps it at a distance.
Hobbs attempts a counter takedown but Ambrose avoids it well and moves away.
Hobbs fails to land with a series of punches.
Ambrose shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hobbs as he avoids it easily.

Hobbs doesn't manage to clinch there - Ambrose circles away.
Hobbs misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Ambrose unleashes a big counter combination but Hobbs bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Hobbs will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Ambrose takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Hobbs counters with a head kick. That will keep Ambrose thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Hobbs tries to close the distance and clinch but Ambrose swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Hobbs seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Ambrose shoots for a double leg takedown but Hobbs sprawls well. He's pushed Ambrose's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Ambrose has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Hobbs after a bit of a struggle.

Hobbs throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Ambrose missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Ambrose stopping the sweep attempt from Hobbs.
Ambrose wants to control from the top but Hobbs keeps moving.
Ambrose keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Hobbs's head.

Hobbs trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Hobbs striking off his back but it's not causing Ambrose any problems.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Hobbs closes the distance looking to clinch
and Ambrose counters with a two punch combo.
Ambrose is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Ambrose shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Hobbs but Hobbs pushes him off and we're back to square one.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hobbs lands a nice leg kick that just misses Ambrose's sensitive parts.
The fight stays on the outside here - Ambrose looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Ambrose dives in for a single leg takedown but Hobbs sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Hobbs really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Ambrose drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Hobbs defends it well.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hobbs, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
