PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ming Xin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Xin comes to the cage accompanied by Chinese Athem. Shaw has chosen Blunt To My Lips as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ming Xin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Illya Tyunina and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaw thows a body shot but no joy.
Xin moves out of range as Shaw strikes.
Xin throws a right hand that Shaw ducks under and follows up with a left that Shaw also avoids with ease.
Xin tries to clinch but Shaw is having none of it.
John Shaw seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Xin drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Shaw is trying to get back to half guard.

Xin working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Shaw is looking to reverse the position.
Xin content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Shaw tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Xin wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Xin is looking to stall here but Shaw recovers full guard.
Shaw wants to sweep here but Xin controlling him for the moment.

Shaw looking to hit a scissor sweep but Xin is one step ahead there.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Xin throws a chopping leg kick but Shaw manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

Shaw scores with a jab. Xin acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Shaw throws a shot to the body.
Xin avoids a punch combination nicely.
Shaw misses the jab.
Shaw tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Shaw tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Xin paws at him with a jab and circles away.
John Shaw is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Xin drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Xin blocks a head kick by Shaw.
Xin takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Shaw cracks Xin with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Shaw jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Xin takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Shaw throws a series of punches but Xin moves out of range.
Xin misses with a hook. Shaw ducked under it nicely.
Shaw throws a lazy right hand but Xin sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Xin misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Shaw misses with a hook.
Shaw throws a looping overhand right but Xin ducks down to avoid it.

Xin throws out a powerful jab.
Xin ducks under a wild hook from Shaw.

Xin drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Shaw keeping moving, preventing Xin from controlling successfully.
Shaw wants to stand and escape but Xin is having none of it.
Shaw tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Shaw wants to hit a switch here but Xin passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Shaw there!

Xin is really struggling to control Shaw but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Xin has control of Shaw's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Shaw regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Xin moves to the back position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ming Xin dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Shaw wants to get back to his feet but Xin is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Xin swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Xin will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Shaw looks to land a right hand but Xin moved out of range.
Shaw works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

and Xin counters with a two punch combo.

Shaw connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Xin momentarily.

Ming Xin is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shaw might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

The crowd cheers as Shaw lands an impressive looking overhand right. Xin doesn't seem phased though.

Shaw throws an overhand right that lands on Xin's shoulder, as Xin tries to avoid the shot.
Shaw pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Xin swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Shaw.
Xin bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Shaw's head backwards.
Xin looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
Xin just misses with a punch to the body.

Xin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Xin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Xin is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Shaw has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Shaw is trying desperately to improve position.
Shaw is squirming around, avoiding Xin's attempts to control the action.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shaw is wriggling around trying to escape.
Ming Xin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Shaw has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Xin has the hooks in. Shaw is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
John Shaw has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Xin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Shaw's guard.
Ming Xin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Ming Xin showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Xin, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
